Default Comet antennas

They are good antennas, but because of that are a counterfeit target. Be careful of the seller.

Diamond and Comet are in about the same league. My personal opinion is that the Diamonds are a little better built, but Comet seems to be a bit more innovative in their designs. I've used both brands with generally good success. But, like an earlier post says, be wary of counterfeits.

Default Comet antenna

There have been reports of counterfeits found at normally reliable dealers. The source of the antennas was the cause, not the dealer in the opinion of the writers. One way they are often identified is by slight flaws in the package printing, not the antenna itself.

That antenna appears to be a legitimate one. Not meing familiar with that particular antenna, I certainly wouldn't swear to it though. (If it works, I personally couldn't care less if it's a 'clone' or not.)
Not being pertinent to the question, and assuming the radio in the picture is positioned as it's normally used, I think you'd see an improvement in reception if you just stood the thing up vertically. There can be quite a difference in signal strength between horizontally and vertically polarized signals. Most of what you hear on a scanner is vertically polarized, so it's not a bad idea to use that sort of positioning for your antenna.
Good luck.

Hey Doc thanks! I wanted to set my 396 in a way so i could fit every into the Picture i tried a couple other ways and it just didn't want to work so i settled on the one you see.

But most of the Time the 396 is standing in upright position and doing Quite well with the New SMA3 and when i was using the small Maldol the scanner was doing a fairly good Job at picking up our Local P.D. And S.O. i was surprised..

Looking at the Comet name logo on your catalog and comparing it to the packaging for your antenna makes me go...hmmmm. I guess if the antenna works to your satisfaction, no big deal...just, hmmmmm.

@N5TWB
The Best thing to Do is get the Catalog to wear you can look inside of the Catalog or have a Look at the Online Site because it does show the Lightning Bolt on allot of the Products but i found the Star on allot of the products as well.

The Ham Dealer were i get my Equipment has the Same Catalog as what i Got and he has a Very well Established Business. He's not going to sell bad Equipment he's got to many Customers that requires the best of the best not second's that will Fail..

You'll notice my comment did not question you, your antenna, or your dealer's ethics -- only pointed out the logo difference which has been a central part of discussions on various ham forums about whether something is being counterfeited. To emphasize my closing comment, if it is working for you and you are happy then we have no problem. As you noted, you have additional evidence where both logos appear to be used. I will defer to your superior knowledge due to having the catalog.

73 and happy scanning!!
