Does a magnet mount actually do anything for reception, or is it merely a way of attaching an antenna to something?

I'm asking because I have a spare antenna and mag mount, and was thinking about just setting it outside on my patio. Does it actually have to be on metal (as long as I'm not worried about it blowing over or flying away)?

The magnet itself does nothing but hold the antenna.
The close proximity to the body metal creates a capacitor that provides an RF ground for the antenna.

If you simply set it outside, it won't work very well unless it is an antenna that doesn't require a ground plane. If you can find something metal to put it on, it should work just fine.
