Should is a subjective word to use. Usually, you want the length of a cut antenna to be in the center of a frequency band your are listening to for max resonance.

A 1/4 wavelength antenna at 850MHz is about 3-1/4" long.

From Antenex.....If you are wanting to listen to "mostly" 800MHz stuff, this is a good model. I have one for my Pro96 mounted on my car. It should fit your mag mount (standard NMO mount)...
