Any body know of any good portable antenna amps, I know GRE has their little 9v amp. I was also wondering what the advantages and disadvantages of an amp would be. I'm using a Radio Shack Pro-83 and hope to go to a GRE PSR-500 at some point.

Discussed dozens of times here.

Try a forum search for "antenna amp" for the threads.

Summary:

Rural area= amps OK but don't buy you much
Urban or suburban area= amps cause overload and are generally undesirable

Amps don't usually buy you anything, and actually increase the noise floor
on cheap ones causing desense and worse performance.

Try doing antenna and cable improvements first. ie: good outside antenna and
cable.

Thanks for the info. Ya I got board a little bit ago and started building antennas out stuff I have around the house. Found some combos that work great.

Yes. Improve antenna, then coax, then think pre-amp.
I can use a pre-amp here in the city on some freq. with good results, but not all.
