Antenna patterns are reciprocal, meaning they are the same for transmitting or receiving. So, if it's useful as a counterpoise and to decouple the antenna from the coax in transmit, it will for receive.

Can't go wrong with a ground plane, even with so-called "no ground plane" designs. This is especially true when using a mobile antenna in a base setup. It's also better to use the NMO mount rather than a magnetic mount. The mobile to base ground plane mount accomplishes both in one package.

Looks like Scanners Unlimited will be selling that Antenex MBC ground plane mount for $26.95 during their going out of business sale.

Of course, if you have an account with Tessco, you can get it for $18.52

There was just a thread where someone had a similar setup....a Larsen mobile antenna on an Antenex MBC ground plane base. I can;t seem to find it but I seem to remember him being happier with his 20-176 antenna.
