Why not try building a 2 meter dipole or ground plane? You can put one together in just a few minutes, for next to nothing! Lots of plans online. :)

It should definitely work! I just mount it on a broomstick and bungee it to a chair! I am able to hit repeaters 50+ miles away. The antenna is portable, and assembles in just minutes!! :)

For Vhf/Uhf, a small portable beam can work well even indoors! I've used the ELK 2m/440 with good results. www.ElkAntennas.com For HF, a small 24 foot end fed can also work OK as a compromise...

I found that a small vhf/uhf beam can work very well indoors! I use the ELK 2m/440 ( www.ElkAntennas.com ) inside hotel rooms with good results! For HF, the 24 foot Ultimax-100 end fed also works...
