What firmware version do you have?
It sounds like a firmware update is available to fix the defeat alert feature.
A recent comment to 'J. Hannah "Radio Junkie" ' on this radio says:
B. Kemp says on May 3, 2011:
Sent an email to Sangean about this. Here is the response from 5-2-11:
Thank you for your e-mail and your interest in Sangean radio products.FYI! the CL-100 we are currently shipping has the new firmware that you would be able to defeat the Voice Alert feature.

Newegg.com has this back in stock. If you are a new customer you can use code NEWCUSTOMER10 to get $10 dollars off plus free 2-day shipping. Got it for $69 after discount. Seems like the best deal running right now.

cl-100 soft or slow squelch gate
My cl-100 has an extreamly soft or slow squelch gate when turning on the radio, or at the start of the voice portion after an alert tone. I lose almost two seconds of audio at the start. Anyone else notice this, or is there something wrong with mine? I can find no adjustment for this.

It's not a squelch gate, it's a ramping volume. Mine does the same - gradually increase the volume from 0 to whatever you have set, whenever you turn it on or select the preset channels.

I really want at least one for myself as I hate the typical low end SAME technology ones (read Midland weather radios and almost all other mass market ones under $100) that ignor the End of message data and shut the warning audio off. I didn't even know about this one until I had to replace a defective Midland WR-100 at a hall Monday night. if I hadn't had an iPad to follow the tornado outbreak we would have been in deep doo doo there. Fortunately I checked that Midland radio's operation and discovered it had been hit by a power spike and ruined even though it appeared ok when looking at it on STANDBY.
I understand the reliability of Midland has dropped sharply this last year.
I bougth an interim WR-300 from Midland and a STROBE to replace one of mine I am immediately donating to that public hall. Minutes after the WR-300 shipped Tuesday I discovered the much more capable CL-100 from Sangean. That is the one we should be using!
So, why are there none available? Was it the quake in Japan?
Was there a defect or reliability problem that resulted in a recall of the CL-100?
So far I have not been able to determine who currently is shipping the CL-100.
The NWS just determined two tornadoes touched down in Gilmer County GA around 10 Monday night. Seven lost their life in those storms in GA as they swept through the state including one in Atlanta.

Here is a google search, it seems these retailers have them.

Ramping volume, learned something new today. In my opinion it is a little slow ramping up, but I can live with it knowing thats the way it was designed. Glad I don't need to return it.
Thank you very much for the reply.

Stupid question, but I have had the sangean CL-100 radio for about 3 weeks now, I have yet to hear the weekly test. It shows the weekly test on the screen as a previous alert , but I never hear it when it happens. I really would like to hear the weekly test to know my radio is working.
I have the weekly test set in the defeat siren menu as "Enabled" is that correct?
When you enable something in the defeat siren menu does that mean the siren wont go off when the alert is received or it will go off?
Thanks!
P.S. I have the latest firmware version, the one which includes the updates for the defeat siren stuff.
What is the purpose of the siren defeat option called "DMO - Practice / Demo" , I had this enabled... wonder if this caused the problem?
I have all the options in defeat siren set to "Enable" because I want to receive any alert in my S.A.M.E area, but as of yet, 3 weeks have passed and I haven't got any alerts, practice or real. It also did not sound off during the Nov 9th nation wide test.

I'm going to guess that you enabled the defeat. Set it to disable and see what happens.

I will try that , thanks.
The manual says to select "Enable" if you want to hear the alert, but it may be the other way around since im not hearing them.

Has anyone received a weekly test alert on their Sangean? If so, was the defeat set to Enabled or Disabled ?

Well... another week went by.. This time I had the Defeat "Disabled" and I didn't receive any weekly test at all. It's not even in the memory.
It's weird, the weekly test will activate my BCD396XT just fine but not on the sangean.
Anyone able to offer any advise before I return the unit? I get full signal from my local NOAA transmitter, so I dont know why im not getting any alerts.
EDIT:
Called Sangean , they said they have no idea why it wasn't responding to any weekly test alerts, they advised me to return it back to amazon for a replacement.
My replacement unit should be here friday, I'll update you guys again on Wednesday and tell you if the new unit responds to weekly tests.

The weekly test just broadcasted here and I got to test my CL-100 replacement Amazon sent me.
I put the CL-100 beside my BCD396XT scanner again, and had some different results.
The BCD396XT activated and the siren went off during the weekly test (as normal).
The CL-100's "Advisory" Light lit up orange, and the weekly test text scrolled across the screen, but no audible alarm was was sounded.
This leads me to believe 1 of 2 things could be the problem:
1. I have the defeat siren set wrong
or
2. There is a bug within the firmware that causes no audible alarm to be sounded ?
The way I read it in the manual, if I want the audible alarm to sound, I should set the defeat siren for the specific alaert to "Disable" is this correct?

Could there be a possible problem since I have everything in the defeat siren options menu set to "Disable" ?
In my area, we don't get many alerts, that's why I wanted to receive anything the NOAA broadcasts in my S.A.M.E area.
Maybe someone on here could test their unit by setting everything in Defeat Siren to "Disabled" and see if they still get a weekly test in audible form?
I have my Alert Mode set to "Voice"
Anyone have any other ideas?

I was curious if you came to any conclusion? I just recently got a cl-100 and although there have been storms lately in my area ( I am 40 miles west of Chicago) I have not heard any alerts. The manual and the menu are more than confusing. Logic would say if you were in the "Defeat Siren" settings and you enabled a code you would defeat the siren and voice alert (I have the latest firmware version).
I will see what happens during the weekly test but I suspect I may have to send it back to Amazon land. Frustrating because it is not clear if the radio is at fault or it is just the settings. When you talked to Sangean did they have any insight on what the defeat siren menu settings really do?

I've figured it all out by myself. If you set defeat siren to ENABLE you will receive that alert. If it's set to DISABLE you will NOT receive the alert. I never did get the first radio to work correctly, but I got a replacement and it worked fine (odd huh??) .
I set everything to enable and I've gotten 11 weekly tests in a row , I set the weekly test to DISABLE , and the test still shows up in the history but doesn't active the audible alarm.
I have no idea why I couldn't get the first radio to respond to weekly tests, maybe it was me or maybe it was the radio, I guess I will never know.
However, this new radio works fine and has alerted me to all the weekly tests (I still haven't gotten a actual alert though)
I also bought a strobe light that activates on alarms just for the heck of it.

I need to clarify this, if siren defeat is set to DISABLE the siren will not activate but the voice announcement will still be heard ? Is my line of thinking correct ?
Thanks in Advance
