SKYWARN doesn't require an amateur radio license, BUT most National Weather Services offices have ham equipment, ham volunteers, and/or have staff meteorologists that are hams.

I've hosted a number of SKYWARN classes in southern Georgia, and alot of our certified people are NOT hams. We encourage them to be involved with some group (e.g., Police, FD, ham, EMA, etc.) because of radio access (also letting someone know where you are spotting). However, you can submit storm reports via phone or computer (eSpotter).

Most hams are public-service oriented and are associated with some formal group (county-level Amateur Radio Emergency Services). All would help pass emergency health & welfare traffic if asked, etc.

I know many folks, locally, who have re-certified as Advanced Spotters that don't care to be amateur radio operators.

It doesn't. A person can be trained for Skywarn and use something like the Espotter internet program through the NWS. You also have areas where a local spotter group runs through GMRS freq's (or in the case of St. Louis County, business freqs) as well the ham bands. A person can also call spotting information directly into the NWS local office.

Max...

Smile Certified Spotter

I am a certified Sky Warn Spotter. I started in Central Florida during the past severe Hurricane years. POL-176. When I moved to Kentucky the NWS in Louisville said they did not assign Spotter numbers so I am now just a eSpotter on line.
