9.000 Mhz broadcast
I am listening to what I believe is a Japanese Broadcast station. It is currently 30/9 in Western New York.
I tried to find a listing in MT but the band begins at 9.250 Mhz.
Looking for any info.
Thanks.

If it truly is broadcast, it's a spur or image. That's not even close to the beginning of the 31 meter band. While it could be a receiver issue, it may not necessarily be - there's been a small rash of religious stations where the engineering has been less than on the ball. It's not likely to be a harmonic of some kind since it would be 4500 khz* 2.
It could also be an overloading product. A little hard to say since I am at work (darn) 73 Mike

When I entered my workspace the signal was already active maybe around 9:30 am. I have this receiver set to a frequency down the band a few kc. This signal was so strong I could not help but notice it. I did use another receiver to go up and down the amateur bands. I noticed that 40 meters was very active but 10 meters was quite as usual. Right after I posted my inquiry the signal started to fade and was gone by 11:00 am.
The programming was only instrumental music without any announcer. I thought this may have been a pirate but, when it faded out it sounded like an band openning.
I don't know if this is related but, last night I went through the off air TV band as I often do before I go to bed. Anyway, last night on a few analog channels (and especially CH 67 which is a full quieting LPTV station located about 15 mi from me) had signals beating from other transmitters.
Maybe, there will be some reports.
Thanks.

"I thought this may have been a pirate but, when it faded out it sounded like an band opening."
When it faded out wouldn't it be a band closing? (;->) It could have been a pirate, clandestine station, spurious emission, a receiver fault, just about anything actually.
FYI a firedrake is not a dragon but a fire elemental in Teutonic mythology. In modern fantasy however, "firedrake" is widely used for any fire breathing dragon.

A little typo here, I'm sure - the original poster was talking about 9.000 mhz, not 9.400. The Firedrake jammer is usually trying to cover something up; although why in the world it would be on 9000 khz (which is not a broadcast allocation) is wierd. But then who can figure out what the Chinese were up to?

[edit] Actually I might have a clue about this. Glenn Hauser's logs shows Firedrake on 9000 attempting to cover up a Taiwanese clandestine known as 'Sound of Hope'. Nice!

Ah, pieces of the puzzle just fell together! No wonder Firedrake is jamming Voice of Hope, that's the broadcaster of Falun Gong the great enemy of the people. If the Communist Chinese government fears anything it's Buddhism and if they want anybody dead it's the Dali Lama. You learn a lot when you Google and even more when you know what Falun Gong is to begin with. (Ah so, Chinee girfend goo ting to have, uh huh.)

Well here you go-

...there goes my active imagination again, but what do you guys suppose it is? By the way, as I was uploading these I was monitoring, and BOTH 9.000 and 8.400 stopped transmitting for 5 minutes, then 9.000 resumed transmitting at 9:00PST. That 9.000MHZ one bleeds all over 8,992 Air Force freq. When you consider the taunting of US Navy the other day plus these transmissions, I say we better be watching charlie a LOT closer!

According to reports, it's thought that the Firedrake jammer comes from Hainan Island in the south China sea.
Here's the satellite map of the island. Can we see any radio installations?
You know back in the 80's the Russian Woodpecker installations were big enough to show on satellite images:
Boy those transmissions were a big pain in the butt. Interestingly, that one of those transmitters was right next to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. A good source of power for that monster transmitter. ( Here's some interesting reading on that.) (Oh, and I just found this audio clip: . HERE )This Hainan Island doesn't look like it would contain anything like that, but who knows?

Google Earth turned this up on the southwest corner of the island. I found a similar but smaller pattern in the northeast just east of Haikou but the resolution is rather poor in that area. This image is highly compressed so you'll do better working GE yourself. The interior is too dark to see much and I can't be bothered enhancing a bunch of screen shots, just make of this what you will.

Clyde, I believe I said that already:
"FYI a firedrake is not a dragon but a fire elemental in Teutonic mythology. In modern fantasy however, "firedrake" is widely used for any fire breathing dragon."
Now if you look a bit further into it you'll find "drake" is an old and now disused word for dragon, you will however find it in manuscripts written in the Middle Ages. That's how the word "firedrake" came to take on a much broader meaning, those sword and sorcery novels generally reflect the period.
I leave you with a name to ponder: Mandrake. Oh and just for giggles I'll toss a little Romanian your way: Dracula.

Hey Warren, might those be salt ponds? That whole area to the west looks like salt. But it could be like the SW coast of Cyprus where the Brits put a bunch of towers next to and in the salt ponds there. I've seen them up close...
And what are all those little round and square black things along the beach and in the salt flats to the east, houses? tanks?
