7285khz China Radio International via Albania to Europe. 2010z in English. HEavy ham QRM SINPO 32442 fair when in the clear.

Droopy wire ... half crippled radio ... still having a blast spinning the dials!
9870KHZ BSKSA 2155z Saudi Arabia in Arabic Good sig as always S9+10 SINPO 44444
9915khz BBC via Ascension relay to west Africa 2205z World news in English Very good S8-9 all in the clear, just some fading. SINPO 44434
7250khz China National Radio (CNR) 2210z in Spanish. Multiple idents in Spanish "Radio National de China", also 7210khz which was louder with less fading. Guessing 7210khz is via Albania and 7250khz is from China proper since it has that 'polar' sounding fade to it.
7265khz Radio Exterior de Espana 2215z in Spanish. VG signal S9+10 but heavy ham QRM.
7440khz China Radio International 2225z weird mix of Japanese being broadcast from Beijing, and Mandarin from Kunming! Wild! S9
7470khz <tentative> Radio Free Asia (Tibet) being relayed via Tajikistan and jammed by China 2235z Fair sigs S8 but steady mix and very quick 'polar' flutter.
7460khz Voice of America via Thailand in Special English! World news with a USA spin. 2240z They signed on at 2230z so they weren't on as I worked up the band 10 mins ago. Good! S9 A little interference from a Rtty station on 7455khz (who's that?)
7450khz Radio Makedonias, Greece 2240z in Greek. Just 10 mins left in this broadcast but they are BOOMING IN! S9+20db. All alone, no interference. EXCELLENT!

Lots of AM broadcast stations coming in from SE and SW Asia tonight.
Logs from 0430 to 0605Z 2/21/13, using my little SDR dongle and an upconverter.:
China Radio International on numerous freqs: 15665, 15465, 15445, 15350, 15140, and 15120
BBC's Cyprus transmitter on 15790 and 15420
Mashaal Radio from the Sri Lanka site on 15760. Also heard Radio Farda on 15535 from same site.
VOA on 15560, I think it was the Udon Thailand transmitter.
Radio Kuwait on 15515.
Voice of the Islamic Rep of Iran on 15500 and 15550, booming in tonight.
Radio Taiwan on 15245.
...and my best catch tonight, Xi Wang Zhi Sheng (Sound of Hope), believed to be from a Taishung China transmitter running only 100 watts. They went off abruptly at 0600Z.

Last evening's session log. One more night off work, then back to the meat grinder.
7490khz WBCQ Monticello, Maine USA 0030z Peter Schilling "Major Tom" song and comedy show (live?). Excellent signal S9+30db
7475khz Voice of Greece 0040z Talk in Greek. S9+20db and all alone. I went for years without hearing Greece, and now they're easy!
7435khz Voice of Vietnam from Vietnam (finally NOT a relay) 0040z 100kw from Hanoi-Santay. I think this is my first logging from actual Vietnam.S9 in the clear.
7290khz Voice of Russia in English via Kishinev, Moldova to North America. 0050z VG S9+15db. Weak ham QRM but very good copy.
7215khz Athmeeya Yatra Radio 0100z ? vernacular from Sri Lanka. Not sure what this is, new for me. Listed at 250kw beaming north, so I guess so! S9 just a little ham QRM. Athmeeya Yathra | Official Website | Manjadi, Thiruvalla 5, Kerala

Oops, change date from my logs above to 2/20/2013, not 2/21. Also add 14750 as the freq for Xi Wang Zhi Sheng.
After logging the above, found a brief opening in the 15 meter band. 2/20/2013 0650-0700Z, then propagation fell out.
Radio Free Asia on 21540 and 21610 from their Tinian Island (Northern Marianas) transmitter, and 21695 from their UAE transmitter, all same programming.
Also Radio Azadi from the Kuwait transmitter site on 19010.

Amazing DX. Too bad their transmitter location is unknown-I'd like to see their antenna. Did you get this on the SDR or one of the rigs?

Highlight of last night's session:
9819.2khz Radio 9 de Julho (assumed) Sao Paolo, Brazil in Portuguese 2350z listed at 9818.3 I've got it just a little bit more off freq. best in LSB otherwise leaves a horrible heterodyne on CRI 9820khz Fair sigs S6 but copyable if I understood Portuguese.

Got it off the SDR. Got lucky working the band openings, but it does work sometimes. One thing about SDR is that the operator gets to "see" what's out there, and not just tune around with a dial hoping to catch something. That area just below 15 MHz was extremely quiet, and his signal stuck out there like the proverbial sore thumb.

Working the old faithful 1964 Zenith Transoceanic out in the livingroom tonight, I caught a tough BBC signal out of Oman right off the built-in 60' whip antenna-starting on the r71a to show how fluttery it is even off the roof antenna having fun with my old buddy!

I'm just beginning to get used to my SDR and meant to listen to the 31m band to test (if nothing else, I could listen to Radio Australia booming in on 9580khz as usual)- but my attention was taken instead by what appeared to be a Spanish numbers station on 9150, 1012-1020UTC. Female announcements in Spanish- usually a group of four numbers- then a minute or two of encrypted data. Just wondering, is this common? The signal was quite strong here in Missouri and not SSB. Audio was quite nice.

Yep, quite common - so much so that there's a sub group of folks that do nothing but track these broadcasts, and sometimes, you can tell where they're coming from (Cuba is very popular for this, but they aren't the only ones by far...)

With North Korea being in the news lately, I figured it would be fun to check in on Voice of Korea.
Had a good copy on their 0400Z broadcast on 15180 kHz. War drums.

But is this just propaganda nonsense? Because they know we can hear them on shortwave or are they actually alerting there top military brass for a "final attack plan"
