Listening to the RNZI broadcast on 15.720 AM ... they are talking about the latest earthquake.

Littleton/Christchurch area. Apparently, there was heavy damage. A local hospital is being evacuated. Street lights are not working.

Special Broadcast with "Mary Wilson" ... about the earthquake ... starting right now.

Quake occured at 12:51pm local time. Center was 10 miles SW of Christchurch, New Zealand and was only 5km deep (that is very shallow.) Reports are coming in about people trapped.

What you hear on RNZI is the same as is being broadcast on our "National Radio" so you're getting it straight - no hiding disasters under the carpet of silence here!

Never felt a thing here in PN, I still have a house in Woodend about 18miles north of Christchurch which was undamaged in the Sept and Boxing Day shakes - hopefully still the same.

My ex lives with he new man in Prebbleton about 10km south of Chc so she's right in the thick of it. No phone contact and nothing on the Ham bands but they have lost power.

Multiple fatalities are confirmed, buildings have collapsed, utilities are out, water mains are broken and flooding homes and businesses, fires have been reported, the cathedral is sitting amongst a pile of rubble, two buses with passengers on board were reportedly crushed, air traffic is at a ground stop.

What you really meant was the airport is closed until they do a runway bearing load test........:)

I worked there for 20-something years. The runway itself is blacktop of course but the base is about 4feet thick hexagonal concrete blocks which tend to shift around in the (not uncommon!) shakes. They have a vehicle that they run up and down for an hour or so looking for voids, cracking and water seepage. Under the concrete blocks is old river bed rock and shingle which quickly settles back down after a shake.

TV pix pretty bad - even new buildings collapsed like the proverbial pack of cards - miraculous stories of escapes but then I guess there's people who didn't escape. The catherdral spire in the square has collapsed - anyone who has been to Chc knows what a landmark that was. Huge rocks fallen from the Port Hills onto Lyttelton township and done heaps of damage. Keep watching the streaming video.

Feel very sad for the people there, but happy that I moved out 2 years ago!

I tried finding NZ and AU from a receiver in Japan this morning on 49 and 31 meters, and they were either super weak, or covered by Chinese or WWCR out of China. Would have never guessed that.

Checking 7440khz on a receiver near Tokyo - zilch. Not a peep (and it's 1am there now). Several Chinese stations on 7445 though.

This receiver has a S7 noise floor of digital hash though. Sux living in the big city.

Found a new receiver in Spain. It's just sunset there now, and I can hear "BPM", China's time station on 10mhz. THat's good DX!

I have 3 hours of that feed recorded from last night. Can post it somewhere if anyone is interested. Lots of 'in the field' interviews.
