Which one is the best for Middle Europe ?

Renamed this thread to be more accurate - you're not asking about the actual protocols, just sites...

System table 49 is current, and if xeno copied those freqs from there, those are the most current list. As as aside, we have this table linked in the 'Related Links' section of...

HFDL - The RadioReference Wiki

While xeno's answer is correct, let's get a little more detailed. You don't want to be too close physically to a particular site, otherwise the signal will skip right over you. You may need to sit on a particular frequency for several minutes to see if this one is being actively used at the time you're listening, at which time propagation becomes a factor. Not all frequencies are busy all times of the day or night, depending on how propagation is working at the time.

Remember the basic rule - listen above 10 Mhz during the day, below this at night. You MIGHT hear an aircraft during the day on lower frequencies IF it's pretty close to you, but this is far from a certainty.

I doubt there's any way to accurately predict which slot (freq) a particular aircraft might use. The rule about propagation still leaves a great deal of space to cover. Mike

I don't know what you expect to see. Unlike VHF ACARS (where certain airlines tend to favor certain frequencies), that's not true here. Any a/c may use any slot regardless of who you are

Middle Europe? IMHO I doubt if anyone is using HFDL in Mid Europe, they'll all be on ACARS. HFDL is a long distance Oceanic reporting system - you may be able to pick up Shannon or Canarias reasonably easily, Bahrain and Reykjavik not so easy. You're at the mercy of propagation conditions as the stations are active on frequencies that suit their location and local time so you may have to get up in the middle of the night or very early morning - but airlines schedules may then not be helpful!

Using your receiver monitor the following frequencies for the HFDL audio, or if you have an SDR look on the waterfall display for signal, these are Canary Islands HFDL ground station frequencies:

6529 kHz
8948 kHz
11348 kHz
13303 kHz
17928 kHz
21955 kHz

Listen to each frequency in turn for more than 32 seconds as the ground station will send a data burst every 32 seconds identifying who it is. You will only know who it is or who any reply is if you have an HFDL decoder connected to the audio of your receiver.

The Canary Islands ground station should be operating so at some point throughout the day you should hear or see or decode something. If you don't then your receiver or antenna is not optimized for the HF bands.
