It's the passthrough for the wiring for the external GPS dongle.

That antenna appears to have a bad case of Peyronie's...

Well, it has been around since the Clinton era... coincidence? Let's ask Monica Lewinsky.

Ok, I looked at the picture on the other link and it has a screw installed. Does the final version have it or just the hole. Not sure if the pic on the other link was a test model.

A couple of my 800MHz RS antenna's look like that also but still work great. I was able to score 20 of those antenna's for $5 each when my local Radio Shack closed.

No screw on production units we were advised.

Yep. I have had a couple of them since the Pro-96 days and they still work great even with a little bend to them. I also have a few VHF-UHF rubber ducks that I can swap them with should I need better coverage in those ranges.

You're making assumptions. Even if something is heavily shielded, enough of a strong signal from a high-power transmitter nearby can get in through the antenna connector for a sensitive receiver to pick up a signal. It depends on exactly how powerful the transmitter is, the radiation pattern of the antenna on the tower, and the exact distance to the tower. Crappy shielding is not the only possible explanation.

That theory could be verified by grounding the antenna input to see if the signals are still received.

SMA/BNC adapters are notorious for damaging SMA antenna connectors if there is any bend or strain on the connection. That RS antenna looks a little top-heavy on the adapter there, also wondering about the water-resistant antenna seal gasket and if it is still employed once after market antennas are connected via adapter? Is it a seal only with the stock antenna, or is the gasket inside the main port and seals once a fitting (adapter) is tightened? Just curious...

The buttons on the keypad look to be slightly raised from the operating platform, if so, I love the keypad layout and the fact that they are lighted! Also, there is a pronounced little knob on the '5' button - what is that for? A reference point like a calculator? Again with the curious questions hah....
