This event started around 02:30 AM on 5/29/11 and is still on-going at the time of this posting.

A concerned family member informed police that an intoxicated man had taken a weapon and fired it. The family member also said that the man was suicidal and there were children and other adults in the home. When officers arrived on-scene the man refused to cooperate and locked himself inside. After a period of time everyone except the man with the gun had gotten out of the home. The Tactical Response Team (TRT) had been requested. At some point a shot had been fired, no indication as to its target, but no one was inside except the suspect at that time. Officers are currently awaiting the TRT and blocking off traffic.

Note: TRT traffic is NOT one of the trunks this feed monitors, that information could jeopardize the outcome of this incident, and officer safety!

A New Haven man was taken into custody early Sunday afternoon after allegedly "displaying" a pistol at an Illinois State Police trooper.

State police at Carmi identified him as Brandon S. Smith, 31. He was charged in Gallatin County with aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated assault, no FOID card, and forcible detention, police said and was taken to the jail in Carmi pending court proceedings in Shawneetown.

State police issued a news release later Sunday afternoon about the "suicidal, barricaded subject," asserting that the incident began about 2 a.m.Sunday at 161 Franklin st. in New Haven.

Troopers responded to a report of a suicidal subject with a gun. Upon their arrival, Smith "displayed a pistol at the trooper," the news release said.

"The residence was also occupied by family members of the suspect, who were later evacuated."

"An Illinois State Police SWAT team, along with hostage negotiators, responded to the scene. Negotiations continued until the suspect was apprehended by SWAT team members at approximately 12:18 p.m. without incident," said a state police statement.
