I've been running an FT-7900 as a base radio for some time now. I'm now toying with the idea of getting a base mic for it, but there seem to be no Yaesu base mics made specifically for this radio. Does anyone know of a good desk mic I can get wired up for this radio? Or will any old mic pretty much do it?

Basically you need a low impedance mic and a wire with the proper terminal to go into the radio.
A friend of mine used a phone type box to connect the radio to the box and the box to the mic.

The factory mic has a wire for the power - probably 8VDC
Two wires for up and down
Two wires for the mic
Two wires for PTT Shield - Ground.

Usually the up and down shorts to ground to activate.
You will not have direct access to the keyboard unless you connect both mic's to the box.
That was how my friend wired his - and he used a Turner Plus Three mic....
He died last year and I missed buying it at the estate sale.

Bear in mind that this is FM operation and a high gain mic
is actually undesireable. If you run with a base style mic
you'd best keep the gain real low so that you do not drive
the radio audio into over deviation levels.

I thought of using a Motorola HMN3000B with an adapter connected to an FT-8800's mini-DIN port on the back for mic and PTT.

As state above don't overdrive it or use a resistor for "padding".

Ideally though you'd want to build a small adapter board so that the hand mic may remain connected and switched if needed.
