Fayette County has applied to the FCC, to erect a five-site, Project 25 simulcast system. More information is available on the FCC Web site:

Perhaps you need to look at the app pending on WPDS263
ULS Application - Public Safety/Spec Emerg, 806-821/851-866 MHz, Trunked - 0005759257 - FAYETTE, COUNTY OF

Fayette is putting in a 7 Site P25 Simulcast System. Among a few typos on the mod for WPDS263 is the correct info for the P25. The typos aren't on the P25 portion and in the hopper with freq coordinator to straighten out.

Also Freqs are To be determined. Current system is operating on 7 of the 10 freqs on the list with. When new system is turned up at 100% it will also be a 7 Frequency- 7 site simulcast System.

Should be at factory staging at Motorola not next week but week after to review the system before they start shipping it this way.

(Not close to install yet, tower leases, and other site development stuff still happening)

Well, finished the system review here at the Motorola plant, and the new radio system is looking good! 7 sites, 7 channels. . . . now to get the site work finished so we can start bolting stuff on towers!

When do you think it will be active?

Dan,

Too many variables. . . . .If all lines up correctly system should be online (testing/optimization) by fall. Lot of site work, etc still needs done.

How long will the 800 Mhz system still be up after that to ensure stability?

Once we have a "cutover" date established (drive testing with foliage is required to be completed prior to cutover establishment) then the exit strategy for the current trunking system will be developed.

However, we are running a Motorola 6809 Smartnet controller that was end of lifed several years ago and is on "available parts" notice which means break downs may not be able to be fixed. The same applies to the repeaters we have operational on the current trunked system and many other components that make up the current trunking system. Breakdowns of certain components may not be able to be repaired at this point. . . .

A two site analog system to a seven site digital system. How much is that going to cost the good citizens of Fayette County? Tower space is not cheap.

I live in the county and I'd donate tower space.. the system we have now is reliable, but the coverage is so horrible. there are too many dead zones

Don't let the address fool you. I also know a little about this system. 800 Mhz works well on flat land. Not so much in the mountains, as you have said.

Low band works really good in the mountains.. but they are stopping the use of that.

Low band is gone as of 6/1/13. VHF will get out out better anyway. Signal being good? Ask South Connellsville or New Haven Hose on the south side. Not so good...

Ask Dunbar even... Dunbar-Ohiopyle Road, well you can't get anything out of there. and that's big stretch.

Analog signal: still gets through. Digital signal: all or nothing. Look at your cable. An analog signal comes through, just has some static (or fuzz) if not 100%.. Digital signal: all or nothing. a scrambled, unreadable signal. Hence 7 sites instead of 2.

Here we go....

The great debate starts all over again. This dead horse has been beat for years. The digital alone is going to improve coverage. The addition of 5 more towers will greatly improve coverage. No amount of complaining is going to stop a system that is already built and being staged for install. Get over low band radio, it's a has been and never will be again. Do I agree with 800 being used in Western PA?? Not at all. Is there anything I can do about it?? Not at all. Accept the fact that the system is here to stay.
