To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi guys,
I am trying to program a friend's EVX-531 radio. I have an account and have the latest CE142 software. I can't get the software to see the radio. I am using an after market cable that works great on other Vertex models but can't get it to work with the EVX radio. Per the customer service people I have to use the factory cables (FIF-12 and CT-106) with this line of radios. I can't get the baud rate slow enough with the after market cable. There is even a Technical Bulletin that says this is a problem with other cables. Has anyone else run into this? Anybody know a work around? Thanks in advance for any info.

I have a generic aftermarket CT-106 serial cable. I was unable to get it to work without using my USB to Serial adapter cable inline between it. Once I used that adapter it has worked fine. Are you using an USB or serial port cable?

I tried using my cable with 2 different usb adaptors and could not get it to work for the EVX radio. These 2 adapters and my after market ct-106 cable works fine with my CE115 software. I even tried my cable with another laptop that has a serial connector on it and it did not work either. The help desk told me the CE142 software will not work with after market cables. There is even a Tech Bulletin (201303-03) that says the FIF-12 is required due to data transmission speed, which is the error I getting.

The response from Vertex sounds like a canned response . . . "We don't support anything we don't make" which is not a surprise.

Is the attached error message the one you receive? I get that one anytime I change the baud rate, but it still works.
If it is the same error, have you tried writing or reading from the radio anyway?

If you are talking about some other error it sounds like you just need to pony up the money and order the officially support Vertex cables. That is the only way support is going to offer any help.

Yep. That is the message I am getting. I tried many times to read and write to the radio but it always gives me a time out error. I tried all 3 of the baud rates shown on the drop down list with no success. Thanks.

I used an aftermarket USB cable with the port speed set to the lowest value in CE with no issues. I have a serial cable also, which would not work no matter what I tried.

Please make sure you are using the FIF-12 USB Interface w/ drivers installed.

If you using a VPL-1 or FIF-10A USB interface it will not work. The FIF-12 will still work with older models
