Don't know about your area but here in NE OH they coordinate themselves on 123.025 MHz AM besides using company and hospital frequencies.

Many corporate helicopters transit that area daily.

The medical helicopter frequencies are easy to obtain from the data base and I think the media (TV) helicopters are in there too.

Military helicopters would be just over flying the air space these days and would be in contact with Philly tower.

They are out there. Pennstar seems to be the most active on radio right now. They do their pager tests at 0700 and 1900. I think some of the services use alpha pagers to alert their crews and do not always tone dispatch.

MedEvac split into two services a couple of years ago so two frequencies are needed to monitor them.

well I hear helicopter almost daily here in my area. skycare is no longer flying as there where shut down at brandywine hospital a couple of years ago they where very active in this area along with pennstar and medevac and lifelion. I use what I have list above so as to help with hearing more I can try to help . what type of antenna are u using if it behind the set or duck antenna then you will not here that much. if u put up a ground plane antenna with good coax like lmr 400 out side up at 30 to 40 feet u will here a lot more here at my home I have heard choppers as far north as southern new York city and new jersey on good weather days. also It depends on the time of day u are listening most happen between 7 am - 5pm Monday - Sat for most of my listen its the helicopter plant at chester co and news choppers coving the area also look hear in radioreference under airports try putting some of the Unicom channels and air to air in like 123.4500 and 122.950 and mybe some tower channels if u have one at your local airport also try open the squelsh up until u hear the static noise and then turn it back until the noise just goes away and see what happens. the antenna I have is radio shack ground plane which can be bought in there store along with the tripod and mast for the antenna the lmr 400 cable can be bought at scanner masters or universal radio with the end on it or u can add the your self. this coax runs about 1.00 a foot or so not cheap but worth every penny.

Listening to an accident/medevac call on my scanner this afternoon and it seems that the helicopter frequencies that worked previously (Lehigh Valley Medevac 464.2000, CTCSS 82.5; and 464.2000 CTCSS 107.2) are no longer in use??? I could hear the firemen and EMTs talking about the LZ, wires and obstacles to avoid, etc but none of the chopper comms/responeses. Previously you'd hear the pilots mention lbs of fuel, flight times, number of people on board etc. Any chance the start of the new year has led to a change???

I can hear Penn Star.......usually nothing but the dispatch tones & pilots position. I also get Life Lion at times. What happend to the rest of what used to be out there and easily heard ? Are they going to a Med channel now to report ? I have birds going over my house often and don't hear much like I did a few years ago ?

I think my antenna & coax is sufficent. Still working on mounting to roof gable on new house. But I have a commercial VHF 6 ft whip antenna connected to each of my two scanners leaning up against outside walls with 1/4" superflex coax. Not perfect but as soon as it gets warmer I will mount outside.

PennStar has at least two transmitter locations that the dispatcher can select from. One is on a tower in the roxborough section of Philadelphia and the other is out near Lancaster.

Quite often when the helicopter is doing a scene call (accident or other rescue) they switch to a local ground contact frequency for landing zone information. Sometimes you can hear them give a brief patient report either to the dispatcher to relay to the receiving hospital or to talk directly to the trauma bay.

call or vist your local fd and see if they have a list laying around that u could get a copy
of ask ems to if they know which one of the helicopters is first due to cover your area that could have also gone with a trunk system in your area try that . put in all of your local fd and ems channels and listen there some go to ground channel ect. They also could have gone to the statewide p-25 or opensky system if they went open sky then u will not hear anything their as it is a celluar type system and no scanner can listen in just like psp went to. this is a i can give u try a serach online to

mattl3320 - Thanks for the additional frequencies.

However, I did have most of them and that wasn't really my question. Less than a week ago I could hear what I described above, the pilots talking to control (flight times, lbs of fuel, number of persons on board, etc); whereas while listening to the accident response on New Year's (Jan 1 2014) that was no longer available. I just wondered if they had made a switch. I appreciate your response and ideas to find out how to get the info IF the freq's had changed. I just was curious as the whether or not they actually DID. Thanks again though.

That the problem I seem to have...........very limited traffic anymore..........you don't hear the patient reports etc any longer ? I travel arond a bit for work through out Pa and have more than enough radios ( commercial Kenwwod dual bands & BC 996 ...all hard mounted MOT antennas ) in my trucks that I should hear anything that is going on............I am guessing myabe using CAD / Aplaha pagers or even smart phones or maybe Med Comm channels on simplex ?

echo676 - Thanks for the report. I was actually very close to the Lehigh Valley Hospital today with my scanner and wasn't able to catch anything. Wrong place, wrong time I suppose. To confirm you heard Lehigh on 464.2000?
