You can. The tantalum is quite a bit smaller - think about how and where you are going to mount the components in your scanner - and better suited for the job.

I was trying to dig up some photos of ones I did on handheld models to illustrate the size conditions inside the unit. The best I could do was the PRO-163. In this case, there is plenty of room to do whatever you want, but I still went with the tantalum to keep everything small, neat and close to the board. The + lead goes all the way through the board and is soldered to the Test Point 4 pad on the opposite side in old school PCB fashion. Good Luck!
