Hi ...... am trying to monitor aircraft east/west bound in the south Indian Ocean area, ie Australia/South Africa tracks. Would anybody have current frequencies? Unable to get anything on the INO-1 MWARA group 3476/5634/13306/17961. Only activity seems Mumbai Radio on 8879.

Thanx

amol I moved your thread and changed the title so that folks in the utility areas can find it

When did you check the other freqs? 3 and 5 Mhz will only propagate at night, and 13 and 17 Mhz during the day (although I suspect 17 Mhz might be a touch too high if you're in North America. Freqs that high during the winter don't propagate reliably). And not every freq is used every day

If no one here answers, your best bet is the UDXF Yahoo group which is devoted to utilities

Thanx for the reply and re-siting the thread.

Tried the frequencies as u said. Am in Asia so 17961 should be ok I guess. Got what sounded like Madagascar on 17961 just once about 1330 UTC. Nothing anywhere else other then Mumbai on 8879.

Any tried and tested frequencies?

Thanx. Amol.

I'm not usually listening to the INO-1 family (a definition here; any group of frequencies used in a MWARA region is referred to as a 'family') as I'm on the East Coast of North America. However it's far and away more likely you'll find an answer on the UDXF Yahoo group, as that's set up to be a worldwide group of utility DXers and listeners (assuming that no one answers here first)

Keep in mind that there would be very great propagation differences between our 2 parts of the world. And the sun has been kicking its heels up a bit recently - that too is going to affect what you can / can't hear.

I have logged 5634, 8879 and 13306 from the western USA.

On 5634 its usually Brisbane, Mauritius and Tana Radio. 8879 I have picked up Brisbane and Beira Radio on occasion. On 13306 usually hear Brisbane wkg flights going across Australia. I guess they like to use HF for domestic flights between Perth and the big cities on the east coast.

Having had a moment to think straight, if you plot the route from Sydney to Jo'burg, you'll see why you don't hear much on the INO-1 frequencies. I flew that route in 2002 and they go a very long way south, probably close to the pole. Unfortunately mostly in darkness and cloud for me!

I'd do some research and see who flies Perth to Mauritius or Reunion, but I suspect you have to go to Jo'burg and then come back to the islands.

There's a 2009 version but it's not free!

...and the NAT stuff is still not correct. :D

The North America region has changed frequencies slightly over the last few years. It's probably good for the rest of the world though.

For some reason that link didn't work, so let's try that again...

The Btown Monitoring Post: International Aeronautical HF Frequency List

It has a pretty comprehensive list of freqs (so please no more long posts of freqs!) along with explanations on the various terms - except for one. A group of HF frequencies for a given area is often referred to as a family, and is preceded by the region that it serves. For example, the NAT-A family, the INO-1 family and so on.

These are often good propagation markers - and keep in mind that not all frequencies are always in use all the time. As aircraft move from one region to another, they may get shifted to one of the frequencies used in the family of their target area or one in the area they're transiting. That's generally how you can follow a flight, if propagation allows it. At some point, the transmission will flip to a VHF aircraft frequency, and unless you're nearby, chances are you will lose it.

....especially without a qualifying reference!

So many similar web pages have no publication date.

I am in the process of transferring the MWARA data to an Excel document so that you can re-arrange it how you like it! I'll find a way to post it here.

The two freq list I posted came from a current copy of the DOD Flight Information Handbook.

Could you quote a source and date? I Googled for the DOD FIH (Enroute) and the last one in the public domain was dated June 2006. "Current" and "Latest" doesn't mean much.

It appears I can't post my modified MWARA list as it infringes the copyright of the publisher, but you can post links to the info.
