I have been using win500 to program my pro 197, when I go to save the file it gives me a choice of saving it as a p500 file or a bin file, does it matter which of these I choose?

Not really - either will work. The P500 format is preferred.

The bin file allows the file to work with other WIN*** software.

The .bin file will not work with other offerings from Starrsoft.com. I save my files with the .p500 extension.

The .bin format is the native format for the PSR-500 family of scanners. Win500 can both read and write these .bin files. I believe that PSREdit500 as well as the foreign-made software can too.
