Hello everyone, I just recently purchased an APX 7000XE with capabilities to cover Newark Fire, However i am new to trunking and how to program it. I've just done conventional until now. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to lend a hand and explain and or highlight key points within CPS V12 for this APX i need to cover in order just to monitor Newark Fire. I have always monitored Newark Fire while on their vhf. Now i'm stuck. Thank you ahead of time.

you would need to have the radio programmed with advanced system keys which will never happen and even if you were to have it programmed by someone in NJSP / PSIC it would eventually show up affiliating and they would figure it out. It's not like the old days where you could have duplicate ID's

Why would he need an Advanced System Key? With the right flash, an APX can use the older style software system keys.

ASK or software key, good luck getting either one. If the OP is authorized, then hopefully his flashcode has the option for legacy software system keys or purchase that option.

What he said....people are confusing a "hardware" key (ASK/ACK) with a software System Key. A software System Key can be used for a Smartzone/Omnilink system with an Astro or Astro25 or APX radio. Your APX needs the proper flashcode option to allow legacy software System Key to be used. Both 3600 (mixed mode) and 9600 (P25 only) systems can be programmed with a software System Key (the APX flash option for soft key is option QA01749AB...on a new radio, this is a no charge option).

A software system key will allow you to create/edit trunking systems/personalities in the CPS. A system key can be generated with skeygen.exe and the system ID or using a hex editor. Once the key is uploaded, you can then use the CPS to program it to use a conventional frequency to call a trunked scanlist that has your talkgroup(s). Radio will not affiliate and it cannot be seen.

With regard to legacy software system keys created for SZ/SN or P25 Tunking systems for Motorola Astro and Astro25 (and appropriately optioned APX) subscriber radios, there is no difference in the format of the data contained within the system key.

To enable read/write restrictions you will need an Advanced System Key (ASK) or an Advanced Conventional Key (ACK) which resides within a dongle which needs to be physically connected to the PC/Laptop while reading/writing/programming. As long the radio you purchased is not ASK locked, you don't have to worry about that.

Or you could just buy and Phase II capable scanner (PSR-800, uniden 436/536) for thousands cheaper...

Or you could monitor the Newark Fire feed hosted on broadcastify....

maybe you should have researched this before dropping big money on a radio you may not even be able to program..

Basic run down of the radio. Currently I've just loaded my usual few hundred vhf frequencies. I was really hoping to get nfd but if not I'll settle. Got a great deal on the unit.

There is a long-running thread over at P25.ca that explains how to do no-affiliate P25 scanning: No Affiliate Trunked Scan Instructions

That radio is equipped for software SysKeys, but good luck getting your hands on one of them (no one is going to give that to you). If you were to program that radio normally for NJICS, you'd probably be stunned in less than 5 minutes if you had an invalid ID. Hello $3000 doorstop...

Not if you program it right !
sorry but you can't just stun any radio because it's listening to a trunk radio system, you have to purchase the stun kill retrieve feature and or turn it on in the programming software!!!

I'm just pointing out the fact that if he's even got the gall to ask in a public forum how to do what he's trying accomplish, he's not the kind of person I'm willing to share that kind of detailed info with.

I've had numerous 7000's since 2009, and I have successfully done what's being asked, so I know exactly what it entails. Just trying to dissuade this user from potentially getting himself in a load of hot water...

God, I wish this forum had the 'like' feature enabled! :D

There have been a few threads that I have come across that require the like button! I'm posting just cause this one is gonna be fun to watch go down hill.

It is pretty obvious scannermanner1 has absolutely no clue... At all.

Why would someone have to give it to him? All he has to do is use some Google-foo and get a copy of the program required and make his own.

There is always "Back Door" way to listen to a system, and the audio from that APX is better than any scanner but if your not sure what your doing it can be dangerous to the users of the system. Think of it like a computer network, your computer has an address and it gets all the data for that address. If your radio has the same address or ID on the system and it registered last the user that registered first will get the data or audio that the last radio told the system it should get. It can be really dangerous for the units in the field, if you have the same ID on a system and your on say fire dispatch and the user that is assigned that ID is on fire ops he can miss audio. Its a fun game to play with co workers when working on a 7X system. Just a friendly heads up on trunking
