Columbia County police -- digital?

All day, I've been hearing what sounds like some sort of digital transmission (sorry, I don't know the sound of the different types) on the Columbia County police dispatch frequency, 154.89 MHz. Is anyone else hearing this, or have I got some sort of local interference going on?

What kind of receiver are you using? Have you picked up any analog transmissions from Columbia County on the frequency lately?

Yes. Just added 154.8900 around 11A and analog coming in very strong. So far not hearing any digital,

Edit@5P:Just Picked up what sounds like MOTOTRBO, Signal strength aroiund 150 RSSI vs Columbia PD vs 517, so it is another agency. Unfortunately, Columbia is not using any PL either, so no way to block it out. Might be able to attenuate it out, though

Actually I rarely pick up Columbia County Police from home, I have the channel programmed just in case.

After posting my message, I heard very little data the rest of the afternoon. I quit listening around 4:30.

I wonder who else is using the frequency.

Agree as I am getting digital on 154.890 here in lycoming county. I am using Realstic Pro-2006 or could be intermod from the state 700 MHZ mixing.

I heard them (whoever they are) strong again yesterday morning, slightly weaker this morning.

May have found your answer, I'm not sure how far you are from Clearfield County, but it's listed as MOTOTRBO .

I'm about halfway between that location and the eastern border of Pennsylvania.

The local CATV system carries one station from Clearfield, but their head-end is on top of a mountain, they're certainly using a directional antenna, the station is low-band, and of course it's a lot more powerful. I'm not on top of the mountain, I'm on the other side of the mountain, and the digital signal on 154.89 is coming in loud on a rubber duck.

I guess the next time I hear them I'll have to see if I have any other odd propagation going on, but I haven't noticed any in the public-safety bands so far.

I had been hearing something TRBO-ish for several days, too. The interesting thing is that it started the same day radio maintenance was hard at work trying to keep the county's radios just barely functional (and they were doing multiple checks throughout that day). I also noticed that the digital frequently seemed to precede and/or follow analog transmissions from the county's repeater, and not occur at other times, so I initially assumed it was just another problem with the repeater.

On the 15th I had about 30 minutes of very frequent TRBO-ish interference, and then decided to flip the attenuator on before my feed listeners began to riot in the streets. That was the last time I heard it. RSSI of the TRBO was 300-330 compared to Columbia's repeater at 480.

After a few days of hearing little or no digital, I finally came across a prolonged period of it today while I was at my computer. So, I fired up SDR# and DSD+!

First, it's not actually on 154.89. It's centered around 154.883. So I don't think it's Clearfield County. (And I do occasionally see a VERY weak burst centered on 154.89, independent of the loud prolonged transmission on 154.883.)

They're having a prolonged test conversation / *****fest about it not working :) I've heard locations "jailhouse", transfer station", "scales", and "in the shop" mentioned so far.

I wonder if this is the Northumberland County digital system being tested. I don't know if I've seen any frequency mentioned for that yet.

I think I've got it!

Lycoming County Resource Management Services (i.e., the Allenwood landfill) is licensed for DMR on 154.8825, beginning last May. So I'm assuming I heard "jailhouse" incorrectly -- maybe it was "scale house".

Looks like another example of people going digital for no good reason. Could've had a nice narrow FM-voice signal, but no, we gotta splatter all over the place...

These guys are loud enough for me that I doubt the attenuator is going to get them off of Columbia County. Maybe if I switch Columbia County to narrowband, but I don't know what that's going to do to the audio if they're not transmitting narrowband.

That all makes sense. It not being centered on 154.89 would explain why it doesn't interfere with the Columbia repeater when it's active (00:25-00:40 in the archive I linked demonstrates that). KDB648 seems unlikely with an omni at 120 miles (best confirmed reception I have around 155mhz is about 60 miles). WQTY222 would be about 35 miles from me with relatively few terrain issues. The RSSI of 300-330 may be a little high at 25 watts, although probably within reason.

Maybe they'll remain so unhappy they give up and turn it off. I'd really rather not have to leave the attenuator on, just in case Columbia decides to use 154.89 simplex some time during an emergency.

Columbia County is all narrowband. I've been scanning all of their frequencies as NFM for a loonng time. The TRBO system still had no trouble sneaking in, though. I wonder if any PDs have complained about the interference yet... Maybe this will finally push them back to using a PL on 154.89.
