I've been to jobs in the city where I know I've heard NYPD division radio traffic coming off of an MTA cops portable, however I cannot recall what kind of HT's they use, but I'm pretty sure they are using VHF in their agency. Are they using dual band HT's or do they link repeaters ? Channel steering options possibly ?

Do you mean MTA police or NYPD Transit?

MTA Police (LIRR and Metro-North RR) is a separate agency from NYPD. They're on vhf, but I believe some of them also sign out NYPD portables.

NYPD Transit Bureau is dispatched on VHF, but there are a fair number of dual-band APX7000's in use that can be switeched to surface NYPD channels. There are also Transit Bureau UHF channels that carry the dispatcher traffic, but the system isn't built out underground, and so they still use VHF primarily.

Im specifically talking about MTA Police, they have numerous stations within the confines of NYC and know they operate on VHF but I've heard them monitoring an NYPD division.

All NYPD Transit units carry dual band APX radios now.

There is no more going into a Precincts, PSA or Transit District and "signing out" a radio. Everyone has their own radio now.

The MTA officer may have had a UHF radio or an APX dual band radio.

There is no linking of the 2 systems. It can be done, but when it is it is done usually on an NYPD point to point low power channel, or on one of the inter op channels. You will not hear it done on a division channel.

MTAPD NYPD I/O

The department has started to replace our VHF Vertex VX900 portables with an Motorola APX7000 VHF/700/800 portable. The only exception is District 9 that patrols the Staten Island transit, and has the same portable but it's UHF/700/800.

Otherwise every vehicle has a UHF portable which can be used with a UHF to VHF repeater to the mobile radio. All of these radios have NYPD and some other agencies also.

Most of the M/O/S don't know this or use it.

I knew it must have been something to that affect. I work in PBBX and know for a fact that I've seen MTA mos' on jobs and could hear my division coming through it. Thanks

What frequencies do the MTA police use at Penn Station? Are they on the 160 MHz frequencies per the rr db still or elsewhere?

Really, no one can help me with this?

At Penn I listen to the MTA PD 160.3200, PL 114.8 and 160.4550, PL 114.8, as well as Amtrak PD is on 160.3650 PL 131.8. I have not heard NJ Transit PD much, but they are on 161.3700, PL 146.2. NYPD Transit is on 160.9050, PL 103.5 for primary and 161.1750, PL 103.5 for talk around.

Thank you very much sefrischling. I wasn't sure if those freq's in the RR DB were still up to date and this confirms they still are. Is 160.320 the main channel and 160.455 secondary talk around?

The majority of NJ Transit PD ops are on their state PD 800 system and NJICS 700 system. 161.370 is still mainly used solely at Newark Penn station. But, does bring up the question whether their units can actually hit those repeaters clearly from new york penn.

Honestly, I'd have to go stand in Penn Station to know that. I have them in my radio as LIRR PD HQ and LIRR PD PENN ... yea yea, I know they are the MTA PD. I don't recall which one is more active, but they are both active.

I only hear them in Penn on that that channel. They don't seem to talk around much, I believe their radios have Amtrak PD on them as well.

I thought 161.370 was for Newark Penn, but I have heard it, primarily when large scale events are going on in the city, at Penn Station in the city. Maybe they switch to those radios for events, as they offer interop? I am not sure. I cover news and primarily transportation security as a journalist, so I tend to focus on air/rail for my coverage.

That's correct. 161.370 is mainly used at Newark Penn and I can barely pick them up two towns away. Honestly, I hardly ever see NJ Transit PD at NY penn. At NY Penn, the majority of the police are MTA along with a couple of Amtrak officers. Certain times there are also National Guardsmen, however their frequency is still a mystery to this day.

I rarely if ever see NJTPD at Penn Station in New York, except when there are big events that bring the crushing hordes into Penn Station.

I once picked up traffic on 139.2625 at Grand Central, which sounded like Nat'l Guard. Never heard anything again on that frequency again or any of the related frequencies.

Wait I thought Amtrak was on 161.295?
