The Feds outlawed scanners in trucks. VIRGINIA State Police went to to the DOT and argued for the law saying a scanner is used for tracking cops, therefor "You can receive any signal as long as it is not used for profit or rebroadcast" really meant that truckers were profiting from not getting tickets and something about "obstructing justice". I would rather think it would be "avoiding" justice. Persionally I think there is a constitutional issue, but I'm too busy making a living. Not to mention there have been plenty of high priced lawyers already arguing the cases.
Virginia also tried to outlaw C.B. Radios in trucks. The courts said FAT CHANCE, stating that CB's are vital information for truckers in storms and even help the police follow suspect cars by talking to the truckers. Several states have CB's in their cruisers. I remember a Tennessee trooper putting out a call to see if anyone saw a car that was wanted in a possible kidnapping. Another trucker called back to him with the cars location and that the car had taken an exit etc.
Many truckers today have their scanners hidden inside bogus CB's or just in the overhead compartment. The truck cabs today are roomy compared to the 70's style cab-over that was like a coffin. Plenty of room for hiding things lol
Being a student pilot, I have taken to buying an Air Band only scanner. I remember something about the scanner not being able to pick up police. If you don't care about police calls, you can look for band specific scanners
