My little birdie told me that Cobb County will have a "ribbon cutting" ceremony on Wednesday Dec 10 at the Cobb Public Safety Village for the new TDMA X2 radio roll out. Time wasn't known. Unknown who is going to be the guinea pigs. Probably Water Department as usual.

Probably was. And I don't work for them anymore! R/MA is the way to go, even though we are working off the broken Fulton analog TRS!

Cobb County, Georgia, Doubles Radio Capacity, Increases Data Capabilities with New Public Safety Radio System from Motorola Solutions

New public safety communications system enables faster, more informed responses to emergencies

December 10, 2014 08:00 AM Eastern Standard Time

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Motorola Solutions, Inc. (NYSE: MSI) announced today that it has implemented a new public safety radio system in Cobb County, Georgia, that allows multiple public safety agencies to effectively communicate with each other to quickly resolve emergency situations. With the Motorola Solutions ASTRO® 25 Phase 2 time-division multiple access (TDMA) system, Cobb County has doubled its radio channels and expanded its reach beyond the county’s borders, so its law enforcement, fire and emergency medical teams can coordinate responses with first responders in other counties when needed.

KEY FACTS
• One of the driving needs for first responders is the ability to communicate seamlessly with one another. Sharing critical information during day-to-day operations and responses to emergency situations can be challenging when the number of calls escalates.
• By using radio spectrum more efficiently, Cobb County’s new system doubles the channels from 18 to 36, which allows more users to operate the system at one time. It also is interoperable with the Motorola Solutions’ systems used by first responders in three other neighboring counties.
• While voice communications are essential, first responders increasingly use live video and other images in the field to analyze and share information. The new network enables use of this data as well as other mission-critical applications that help to improve efficiency, safety and decision-making for Cobb County first responders such as over-the-air programming, fire station alerting and weather siren alerts.
• Cobb County 9-1-1 serves a population of approximately 750,000 people and covers more than 340 square miles. The 9-1-1 center manages more than 900,000 calls for service each year through 34 dispatch positions and provides dispatch services to four law enforcement agencies and two fire departments.
• The Cobb County system is the first ASTRO 25 Phase 2 TDMA system, allowing several users to share the same frequency channel by dividing the signal into different time slots, in the State of Georgia. This updated system is considered a “regional core” system, meaning it serves an entire county as well as neighboring counties.
• The ASTRO 25 Phase 2 TDMA system is part of Motorola Solutions’ portfolio of mission-critical communications that is transforming public safety operations and providing Cobb County first responders with a highly reliable communications network to respond to day-to-day operations as well as emergencies. The system can be easily upgraded to incorporate future technology.

SUPPORTING QUOTES

Ann Flynn, 9-1-1 emergency communications director, Cobb County, Georgia

“Our recent deployment of Motorola Solutions Phase 2 TDMA technology in Cobb County has provided our users with additional radio channel resources and additional radio system networks. While the enhanced system will dramatically improve inter-agency communications and the ability to coordinate local and regional first responders, the real benefit will be the improved communications between those in the field, thereby ensuring a higher standard of first responder safety.”

Jim Mears, corporate vice president, Motorola Solutions

“Motorola understands the importance of providing our customers with innovative solutions that enhance information sharing and deliver a unified operational view of incidents to ensure a well-orchestrated and coordinated response. Our robust, regional ASTRO 25 Phase 2 TDMA System will enable Cobb County to handle calls faster, allocate resources more efficiently and coordinate seamlessly within its operation and with other departments and agencies in the region.”

Oh really? Clayton county is the first pure phase 2 with no DDM and only a handful of interop phase 1 TGs. I wonder why Clayton county was not mentioned...nor TACN, which both made it to the air with TDMA before Cobb turned up their zone core to 7.14?

Wonder why they failed to mention those two? Hmm...

The press release says "New public safety communications system enables faster, more informed responses to emergencies."
So, two-way radio traffic using TDMA travels to another radio faster than FDMA, and what is said into the mic is more informative, too? Really? That's some impressive technology!
As for Cobb being first in Georgia, wasn't Columbia County first? Clayton's been on the air too. TACN is ASTRO 7.13 in Catoosa, Dade, Walker and Whitfield. Didn't the big Savannah regional system also get 7.13?
On another note, is Cobb now Phase 2, or is that a transition for next year and beyond?

Yeah, gotta love puff pieces written by marketing people who have no idea what they are selling.

.

What I thought. Not to mention Clayton county's brand spanking new (just went live in late October) Astro 25 7.14 phase 2 700 system. Maybe those customers didn't spend as much as Cobb county has over the past 20 years to get a puff piece.

In perspective: Cobb spent just over $34 million on their Smartnet II system in 93, another 27 million in 05/06 for Astro 25 6.xx phase 1, and now another 12 million in 13-14 for 7.14 phase 2.

Keep in mind, this is for the "take home" price. Doesn't count the $1 to 1.5 million a year in operating costs of these systems. So add that in too.

Over the past 20 years, this amounts to (roughly)...wait for it....93 million dollars give or take a few hundred grand.

Guess we are due at least a few good puff pieces!

On another note, is Cobb now Phase 2, or is that a transition for next year and beyond?
.

At present, all their served agencies are using phase 1 subscriber gear. I am sure this will change. Bet the timing will coincide with the new Race to Waste turd stadium we also coughed up almost $400 million bucks for.

Remember that moving to phase 2 isn't a big deal for Astro 7.xx systems, most templates don't even have to change other than checking a few boxes in Provisioning Manager in the core and enabled "TDMA capable" in the APX CPS.

Of course this means replacing all those barely 6 and 7 year old radios, but hey, we got it like that apparently! Nevermind hiring more cops, let's build ball parks and buy new walkie-talkies!

Hey fellow Cobb, taxpayers, BOHICA!

Are they in the clear or are they encrypted? I understand certain activity is encrypted. Just wondering.

Cobb? very little encryption, except for MCS and a few other high profile stuff like SWAT, ERT, etc. And it's all AES-256, none of this sissy weak ADP garbage.

The land of broken calculators.
Why would that be encrypted?

So that if they're rolling up to the door in one of their tanks to serve a search warrant and rummage through the house of a suspect believed to have stolen motoro*a trunking radios, they will have the element of surprise.

Then again, maybe they just wanted a special channel where they can go shoot the breeze and talk about this n that.
