On the way to work today I heard a lot of traffic on Statewide Traffic 3. I think they were in the Killingly area. I heard talk of "they are entering CT", " the last car is a Chevy Envoy with an American flag". I also saw a rolling road block Just North of exit 93 on 395 in the southbound lane. Any know what that was about?

I'm listening to them now at 7pm. I heard them earlier this afternoon also, sounds like a convoy of cars and trucks. I can't tell where they are.

Not only awesome, but the type of respect more Americans should show for those who serve, both military and civilian.

They also gave Hunter Hayes an escort through Connecticut this summer during his 24hour marathon of concerts on the east coast. I never understood that.

Sorry for the bump, but what exactly are the statewide traffic channels?

I have heard of them but honestly don't know what they are used for and who has "control" over them.

Thanks.

The traffic squad division uses them for their primary communications. They are a separate unit from the troops of that district that does speed checks, traffic law enforcement on the highways and other details like DUI check points (usually they control the operations). Each traffic squad has their own frequency (1 is western district, 2 is central district and 3 is eastern district). Most of thier communications are with the "message center" at CSP HQ in Middletown though each troop can listen into their district "traffic channel."

That is how it was set up when I was still dispatching for CSP, things probably have changed greatly since I left.

The traffic squad division is a division of CSP??

So basically you're saying these channels are just used for CSP highway/traffic enforcement?

Interesting, didn't know that, but glad I asked.

Yes and this squad is not to be confused with the DMV inspectors. Also the CSP has a "truck squad" which is made up of member troopers from each of the troops. At least that's how it was when I was dispatching still so things probably have changed on that as well.

Now mind you highway enforcement is provided and covered by each of the local troops that have highways located in them. The traffic squad is more of a state wide entity though each trooper does have a base troop and only do enforcement on the interstates and highways. The traffic squad troopers are kinda like nomads per say, they check in but are not part of the troop strength.

Interesting...

Might be something worth monitoring... Are these the guys you see on the Merritt and other highways?

Forgive me if I'm asking stupid questions. I've just always wondered about this whole "Statewide" concept.

Not a concept. CSP is broken into three districts. West/Central/East. Each district may have its own specialized units - and the radio system is broken down to allow flexibility as the radios are programmed in a district fashion so users do not have to "hunt across the radio" to find them.

Either way, troopers use the MDT's quite often for traffic stops and may enter all their information without dispatcher intervention. The dispatchers will see the location and status but you may not hear anything on the air. This includes the traffic squad and road patrols.
