To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

So right now, I'm using my Kenwood TK-862G base unit as a scanner to listen into my local school bus frequencies.

It's working great, with exception to one problem that's driving me nuts. I have some unwanted noise coming through on one of the frequencies. It's sounds like a "spitting" sound. It comes through very often (although not always) about every 30 seconds and it sounds for about 5 seconds. If I touch the antenna, the sound stops. The radio only does it on this frequency. The sound does not come through my Uniden scanner, and it's also not transmitted over the TK-8180s in the buses, only my radio. Chatter does override the sound.

I've tried reprogramming the frequency and reconnecting the antenna but with no luck. I'd like to have the radio up loud everyday, but every 30 seconds I get blasted with the sound and I have to turn it down.

The sound can be heard at the 9:06 point in one of my videos:

Thanks!

Sounds like DMR/MOTOTRBO.

Your Uniden is likely less sensitive and the bus radios don't have a high antenna like the base does.

you might try programming the RX for tone/digital squelch, assuming you know the CTCSS/DCS tone that is being used, this will eliminate your hearing the racket between transmissions from the desired "bus radio" traffic.

What I heard in your video is a data stream. So the obvious question is if you are listening in conventional mode on the repeater output, what type of system are they running. Single channel trunked?

Or are they running messaging data to send text to units on the road?

Can't program the radio for tone/digital squelch. Read what you wrote too fast. I don't have the tone.

And I don't know what kind of system they are running. I don't think it's trunked. I thought it would not accept the radio if it was trunked. Also, aren't trunked frequencies in the 800 MHz range? This frequency is in the 461 MHz range.

However, I think I may have fixed it, or at least made it better. I turned the squelch up from 5 to 9, and although I heard it a couple times, I've had the radio on for about 30 minutes without hearing it.

Does sound like MotoTrbo digital as "KevinC" said. From you description sounds like it could be a co-channel user using digital. They are probably farther away from you than the bus base station. That may be why turning up the squelch or touching the antenna mostly eliminated the noise. Check the FCC database for other users on the same frequency.

I see. Well thanks! So far everything seems to be working great. I get the sound every now and then, but it's shorter and only happens probably every hour or two now.
