• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have a Motorola Maxtrac 32 channel that I can't get it to scan the channels. The model number is D43MJA7JA5AK. When I bought the radio it only had one channel programmed in it. I programmed 23 channels in the radio, but when I press and hold the scan button on the face for 2 or 3 seconds it will not let me program the channels I want to scan. I did program a scan list with the software, but it still will not scan. Anybody have any idea's what I can do?

Is your microphone hang-up grounded? If not, I believe there is a setting in the RSS which will allow scanning without the microphone being "on-hook."

The mic has to be hung up on a metal mic hanger for scan to work. If you don't have a mic on the radio, then you need a little jumper assembly that shorts out two pins in the mic jack on the front of the radio. Pin #3 (hook) needs to be shorted to Pin #4 (ground.) in the mic connector.

There are several previous threads on the subject.

I used to have some but gave them away over the years. They can be purchased from a very reliable seller on ebay called mre1032. If he does not have a current listing for them, contact him. He's great to work with.

Not in the older radios. The jumper is needed, either by the mic itself or the shorting assembly.

Yes, the microphone is hanged up. I changed the setting with the software where it didn't need to be hung up, but changed it back.

One of mine was doing the exact same thing. I traced it to a cold solder joint on a surface mount resistor. Re-flowed solder and now it works like a charm.

If the radio is in scan and the mic is on hook, you will only have horizontal bar(s) in the display. When the mic is off hook the display will alternate between the horizontal bars and the channel number. Easy way to tell what state the mic is in.

If you have constant horizontal bars then your scan problem lays in programming.

On mine, there was an open between the 5V source that was feeding R880 and R880. Upon pressing my meter probe on R880, I got the correct readings, but when I lifted the meter leads, the open appeared again. Pressing on the 5V side of R880 resulted in the radios scanning (I had the mic grounded). Re-flowed solder to both sides of R880 and it now works like a champ.

Glad you found your problem but I'd say that's kinda rare. Microphone failures are much more common. Bad cords or the HUB contacts fail in the mic, especially in the white compact ones that cannot be opened to repair.
