Uniden Warranty

I have just been told by UPman on another forum that Uniden will not honor warranties on new Uniden equipment sold through Ebay. The dealer in question was Main Trading Company. They sell directly, through Amazon, Ebay, and probably others.

It seems odd that a receipt from MTC is good if provided through Amazon or directly, but that Uniden will not honor the warranty if MTC sold through Ebay.

Does anyone have any experience with this? If UPman checks in, did I misread what you said? If this is accurate, I won't be buying Uniden but I don't want to dismiss a company entirely unless I am correct in what I am hearing.

Not meant to trash Uniden, they are free to do what they want, within the law. It just makes no sense and I'll be checking with MTC.

Can you post a link to the other forum where Upman posted this? Hard for me as a dealer to think this is true.

"We honor receipts for primary online retailers. E*Bay is a secondary marketplace."

I wonder if Amazon is a "secondary marketplace" as well? They are essentially the same as Ebay when it comes to sellers. There could be a lot of sellers and buyers in trouble if that is the case. And if not, it would be helpful to find out what the difference is,

This is the first ever I have heard of a retailer having the warranty denied because of their method of selling. Every other company I queried said Ebay and Amazon were fine from a retail seller.

Maybe that would have been wise to do BEFORE quizzing a public forum about it.

I don't see why that would be, but so you know, MTC said they were not aware of this Uniden policy. Besides, they would not have knowledge about other sellers having trouble with the Uniden policy. People here would.

Uniden ALSO said that they honor their retailer's new scanner sales - ebay or otherwise.

What they would not be able to warranty is a scanner sold as used, or sold by a non-retailer on eBay since the non-retailer is the first owner.

I believe that is Uniden's position, although I cannot speak for them.

MTC is a primary retailer, ". ..we are an authorized Uniden dealer".

The post said that Uniden, essentially, would honor the warranty if you purchased it from MTC's site (primary retail), but not if you purchased the same scanner, also from MTC if they sold it on Ebay (secondary marketplace).

I have no inside knowledge, but as long as the receipt is from "MTC" how would they know where the transaction actually transpired?

Maybe I'm missing something.

I'm just passing on what UPman said specifically about this scanner sold by MTC through Ebay. Also, most receipts through Ebay have something that indicates "Ebay".

Radioshack sells through ebay.
Best Buy sells through ebay.
Both sell the Uniden scanners with Best Buy having them listed on ebay as we speak.
Several companies are selling through ebay and as long as the product is new and bought from Distribution center I think they Uniden would have to fulfill the warranty. I know companies have been taken to court because they did not want to warranty an item sold by a unauthorized company but were made to warranty the item.

Wow definitely watching this thread.... My enthusiasm for picking up a 436 is fading by the day. What sort of a company doesn't honor their warranty when their products are sold by an AUTHORIZED RETAILER? I guess a company looking for any excuse not to stand behind their products

If you buy it through ebay you'll definitely have an ebay receipt. Whether MTC also sends you a receipt that doesn't mention ebay is an open question. As mentioned above, there are a number of Uniden dealers who use "third party" selling options like ebay, Amazon Marketplace, etc for additional exposure and sales who may not send you their own receipt separate from the marketplace

Look at the problems they've been having with their scanners lately.....

Would you want to stand behind something that you've produced that has had as many problems as Uniden products?!?

Can't blame 'em!

I'd find any excuse that I could too.

I see what you guys are saying.

This situation needs clarification, especially for the authorized dealers (and distributors) that sell through Amazon and/or eBay.

Escort, maker of radar detectors, has an interesting web page devoted to this topic.

https://www.escortradar.com/unauthorized-list.php

In particular:

Warranty Exclusions

Warranty does not apply to your product under any of the following conditions:

...Your receipt or proof-of-purchase is from a non-authorized dealer or internet auction site including eBay, uBid, or other non-authorized resellers....

You are not the original purchaser of the radar detector from an authorized dealer or did not receive it as a gift from the original purchaser of the radar detector from an authorized dealer.

Some of the dealers on Escort's unauthorized reseller list also sell Uniden scanners on ebay. I found Escort's web page while researching ebay scanner auctions.

UPMan's second post DID clarify it and was relayed in post #7:
"Uniden ALSO said that they honor their retailer's new scanner sales - ebay or otherwise."

The key is that you purchase the scanner from an authorized dealer for it to be considered first-owner merchandise.

And that's how it should be but that's not how I read upman's posts in that thread
