For a few weeks now I've heard "Community Paramedic 271" being dispatched to what seems to be minor calls. Is this a Medic in an fly car (that's what we called them back east) to check something out to save on sending an Engine Company????
Chandler has 2 Community Paramedic units, 281 is one of them
and are running with Ford-350 Type 1. The other one is a Ford-350 with a Squad Box
they are manned by a crew of 2 which 1 is a paramedic they run weekday during pick hours

The Community Paramedic concept is not new nationally, but it's growth nationally and its implementation by some local jurisdictions is fairly new. You can read more about Chandler's implementation of the concept at http://www.iaff.org/Paramedicine/CHSDM.pdf.
The short of it is that behind the scenes, the Community Paramedic program is much more than an F-350 with a crew of 2 that handles certain medical calls - it is an attempt at a much more holistic and novel approach to paramedicine in the field, with some new ideas to try to reduce cost, improve outcomes, and minimize repeat transports, by better allocating resources and follow-up.
