Ok. Thanks. This is the first one I've saw with an SD card that doesn't record.
It doesn't have a SD card either. Click on the link I posted and you can see it's features.

It is a DMA scanner. Only the HP scanners have a SD card.

You may be confusing the BCD996P2 with the BCD536HP which does record and uses a SD card.

What about close call? Does it show the frequency without user intervention like the 436/536?

Hmmm. Must not have been a good answer. Their beta software supports the scanner, today. Just have to download/install it. No need to wait.

Not sure what that link was, but yes FreeScan, ProScan, and ARC-XT all work with the P2 series (latest versions of each are required, of course).

Update: Looked at the link:

"2.18 with experimental support for 996P2 & 325"

with a link to:
fssetup-218b3.zip

Why wait? Just DL 218b3 and use it.

The FreeScan 2.18 Beta is just the .exe file.

You will need to install FreeScan 2.17. Then download the 2.18 Beta. Move the 2.18 Beta .exe file into the FreeScan 2.17 directory (wherever you installed it), and use the 2.18 Beta .exe

The Freescan 2.18 download at the link I posted above contains an exe file that is the set-up executable that launches the setup wizard, and will install the complete 2.18 beta on your computer. I have never had 2.17 on this computer. The 2.18 installed and runs just fine without any trace of 2.17 needed. Using Win7 64 bit.

I did the same and had the same excellent results on Win 8.1

My apologies for the above post regarding 2.18.

I was running 2.18b2, and that release included only the executable, requiring an installation of 2.17.

I have since downloaded the 2.18b3, and as noted, found that it included a complete installation.
