I'm noticing two CHP aircraft now (a fixed wing and a helicopter) both out of the Valley Division that are transmitting an ADS-B signal. In short, this means these aircraft are now trackable using PlanePlotter software and are giving out their latitude/longitude, altitude and speed. This is something new up this way.

Has anyone else noticed this in other areas of the state? For those that have the receivers anyway?

Yeah, N130HP and N974HP are the ones I'm seeing out of Auburn. I guess they are getting rid of the 206/208's in favor of the GA8's. They look hefty.

I see the copter out of Fullerton Airport out on the screen almost daily. I've also spotted on in the San Jose area one night.

Monitoring of police copters in the LA area with ADS-B is hit-and-miss, and an uneducated guess points me towards the conclusion it has to do with low elevation of ther mission, hills, and location of the receiver.

I seem to remember reading that some of this data is from private parties sharing their data, which if so might explain why I pretty much see anything in the L.A. basin but once a copter goes over the hills and into one of the Valley's it will often disappear but still seem planes that are higher up.. I never see any of the LASD air units that are in the Antelope and Santa Clarita Valleys once again hinting at spotty coverage.

It would seem the info I have read claiming reception of planes hundreds of miles away is only as good as the altitude is great.

So I suspect there is a whole lot more to see if the coverage were in place.
