it was a 172 belonging to Fox Flying Club at DuPage. at about 14:15 in the attached audio clip you hear the male pilot in N62681 report to DuPage ATC that he is a 4-5 miles northeast inbound but having problems with the rudder so he is going to stay out there to deal with it. ATC tells him to report inbound and then asks if he needs assistance with the rudder and the pilot responds, 'No, I don't think so'. that's the last 2-way communication with the pilot. a minute or so later ATC calls the pilot stating that he has "are you still out there, I've lost you on radar". ATC asks another pilot in a Skylane if he sees anything but that pilot indicates no but does make reference to a target on his scope that was off to his right at 1500-ft. a short time later ATC goes silent for a short time, presumably he's on the phone with someone. the second pilot offers to turn around to look but ATC does not answer.

whatever happpened seems to have happened quickly. either the pilot was pre-occupied with his rudder problem and entered a stall/spin or there was some other catastrophic failure because the damage on the ground would seem to reflect a high speed impact with the ground.

truly a sad event.
