For those that own or have evaluated the WS1095 and Uniden's BCD996P2, is there any WS1095 feature or performance improvement that justifies the $100 premium for the WS1095? I am comparing prices from The Hamstation: BCD996P2 = $370 and WS1095 = $480. Thanks.

I have both, and for me only, the remote head (for mobile) is the compelling reason for the extra $$. But if you have no need for the remote head, the 996P2 is a fine scanner.

Also have both and agree that unless you have a strong reason for the remote head or the national database availability, would recommend the 996p2. It does very good digital voice on both phase 1 and 2 systems.

The BCD996P2 was designed by Uniden to be an entry P25 Phase II scanner. I would think that the WS1095 is more on par with the BCD536HP ($500) if you're trying to compare fairly equivalent scanners.

Some of the things that I can immediately think of that the WS1095 has over the BCD996P2 are:
  • Remote Head (as mentioned by a number of people)
  • SD Card Memory - Expandable up to 32GB (Same as the 536HP)
  • RadioReference Database (Same as the 536HP)
  • ZIP Code Scanning (Same as the 536HP)
  • Standalone Audio Recording (Same as the 536HP)
  • Discriminator Output (Headphone Port)
  • P25 Patch Following

I don't own either so I may have missed something.

Which model were those features for? It seems it's a mixed list, as many of those features apply to both models (1095 and 536).

That said, I agree the remote head is the only real substantial benefit I can think of. (compared to a 996P2)

The features were geared towards the original question of what the WS1095 has in features in compared to the BCD996P2. I was only trying to point out that price difference between the WS1095 and BCD536HP is much closer to each other.

I can't really answer the "justifies" part of the question as it is very subjective as to what features one would like to see. If anything in the list is not a desired feature, then by all means go for the BCD996P2. For example, while everyone has mentioned the remote head (which I think is a very nice feature), I personally think that P25 Patch following should be a mandatory feature for any current P25 scanner. It is because of this, along with the lack of desire to address this topic, that I have yet to purchase a Uniden scanner.

I just ordered a BCD996P2 from one of the Amazon vendors for $350.95. Its been at the price all weekend but was close to $390 all last week. Pricing of the 996P2 seem to be fluctuating where the WS1095 is still not too far off the introductory price of $499.

From viewing all the videos of both scanners and once owning the GRE made PRO-197, 106 and PSR-800 I like the sharper and more intelligible audio of the GRE scanners along with the whistler WS1095 compared to my BCD536 and 436 HP's. I expect the audio will be a little better from the 996P2 compared to the 536HP. I also purchased ProScan for the X36HP scanners and can also use it to program the 996P2 and will be purchasing RR Premium to download the data base.

I live in an area with multiple P25 800Mhz Phase 1 Simulcast systems and if the 996P2 works as well as the X36HP's - I'll be happy.

I could be wrong, but I thought the WS1095 incorporates a true NFM filter, something the Uniden doesnt have. Also, many people (myself included) feel that the GRE legacy phase 1 demodulated audio is slightly 'better' than the Uniden. I presume that the WS1095 uses the same decoder.

Horses for courses...
