I was in PA bus terminal the other day and i saw a PA brass (white shirt) walking around with a radio tech and they both had APX portables in hand.

I am wondering if they are doing range testing or doing some other kind of testing to upgrade?

Is there anything in the FCC ULS that indicates a change of emissions?

It is my understanding that is is going to be a Tetra system and it is for JFK Airport personal (ie Ramp and ground crews) Not Port Authority As a whole I can be wrong but that is the word I am getting.

You are right but the TETRA system is put together by Rockwell Collins/Powertrunk that replaces the current IDEN system.

If it ain't broken, why fix it? Yet, the PA is constantly crying poor.

EDACS has reached EOL and the parts to fix it when it is broke will no longer be readily available pretty soon.

Is that true for all EDACS systems in general? My town uses an EDACS system and I have not heard any talk of a new radio system.

End of life does not mean you need to stop using it there just won't be support anymore which means as parts break they can't be replaced alot of towns are still using radios and systems that are eol but still work fine so no need to replace what's not broken.

Robert, I agree and you are absolutely correct. There are several EDACS systems nationwide, and therefore a high demand for parts for repair, so I don't buy that one bit. Also, doing quick google searches indicates no articles found backing that claim.

Uh, N2ZGE, I'm not really making a claim. The word has been going out over the last two years to system owners/managers that Harris will cease direct EDACS system support by 2017. Sure, there are a lot of spare parts around, but production is in drawdown and Murphy's law always strikes hard when you need something very specific that's no longer made.

You guys are absolutely right that EOL doesn't mean oh-crap-shut-it-down-now. However, for public safety system managers and techs, it's a little iffy to watch EOL (and subsequently end of specialist support and parts production) creep towards you at the same speed a system replacement takes to agree on and get functional.

I guess my town didn't get the memo. About 2 years ago they added 2 new frequencies to their EDACS system to expand capacity and also upgraded several transmitter sites. We're a town of 50,000 residents and all agencies including PD, FD, DPW, etc. are all on the system. It will be interesting to see what they do if this 2017 date holds.

The frequencies have noting to due with it they are not going to support EADACS after 2017

That's not my point. My point is my town expanded their EDACS system rather than looking into an alternative. Why waste taxpayer money on upgrading transmitters and adding new frequencies to a system that will be approaching EOL. The money would have been better spent if it was put towards a new system.

Verona is also using an EDACS narrow system. It sucks and they are looking to move to NJICS.

The FCC emission IDs have not been updated to P25 yet, but that usually is a much quicker process in the FCC than say issuing a new license.

Let's see what December holds!
