On my BCD996P2 there is an arrow that sometimes points up and sometimes points down. It is on the display screen on the left hand side, about middle of the way down. Any ideas of what it represents?

Whether you are scanning up (foreward) thru your systems or down (backward).

You can change the direction while scanning by turning the big right knob.
