What antenna for highway driving?

I want to listen to highway patrol / emergency broadcasts while I drive ... I know little about the technical part of scanning, so what type of scanner should I be looking for, and what questions should I ask the store.
This would be for a Uniden BCD436HD scanner. The antenna should be something with a magnet base that I can plop on my car roof.

A lot depends on what frequencies the systems you want to monitor are on. I use a Larsen 150-450-800 multi band antenna mounted on a magnetic mount.

+1 on the Larsen, great antennas and pretty low profile. Mine's through-hole NMO but I know they work almost as well on RX mag-mounted. But if you're looking for Low Band coverage, it's not going to shine down there...

Be sure to check your state laws; some states prohibit scanning in a motor vehicle.
