• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have an option to purchase a HT1250LS radio at a really good price. I will be using it for UHF conventional within the 450-512 range for work purposes. I am reading that there is only a max of 16 conventional channels which is fine for work but I am curious about the remaining 128 trunked channels it says it can handle. Does this mean I can have my conventional frequencies put in and on top of them a UHF trunking system? (Not that I need one)

Yes. You can have the 16 conventional, and the 128 trunking on top of it.

If you do not need the trunking I would be looking for a non-ls version of the HT1250. Those 128 trunked channels can only be use for trunking channels. So you're stuck with only 16 conventional channels as opposed to 64 convention channels on a non-ls radio.

xls is probably the ht1550. I believe the difference is the type of trunking system the radio will do.
The XLS is part of the Commercial Series CP200 product line and not the Waris HT1250's and 1550's.

Edit to add.....

My error here. There is a HT1550XLS model. It was a Conventional/LTR radio with 160 channels. (The CP200XLS was much more commonly seen.)

In general, the LS models are Conventional/LTR while the LS+ radios are Conventional/PassPort.

Before purchasing any radio, obtain the model number and look it up to be sure that it has the features wanted.

All of the 1550's ive seen tend to have XLS at the end of the number. Not sure if there is a 1550 without the XLS or not.

Sorry but I do not know the difference. I stay away from the LS versions as I have no need for the trunking options.

I said it earlier, but it bears emphasizing in this discussion....

LS or LS+ or XLS or plain is not nearly as important as verifying the model number and the exact features included the radio. To do that, you MUST have the model number of the unit and then refer to a model number chart. This is the only way to be certain what features are in the radio.

Here's the model number chart for the Professional (Waris) Series portables for North America and Latin America:

Interesting chart. I never knew there was an 800Mhz offering or smartzone option for warris portables.
