I was running a VHF search just a few moments ago when suddenly my radio stopped on an odd digital sound on 161.0400 so I ran it on my AR-DV1 and it detected that it is an NXDN digital mode signal (displayed on the AR-DV1 as D-CR) So far it sounds like comms to the CP planner.

Very few licenses for it nationwide, none here. Most often paired with 160.23, 4K00F7W modulation.

There are some in Ontario at a big intermodal hump yard but not CP, these are for CN
Code:
Concord - MacMillan Yard

Frequency Input License Type Tone Alpha Tag Description Mode Tag
160.23000 161.04000 RM 0 RAN South South NXDN Railroad
161.34000 160.53000 CKU476 RM 0 RAN West West NXDN Railroad
160.47000 161.28000 RM 0 RAN East East NXDN Railroad
161.10000 160.29000 RM Express Express NXDN Railroad
160.95000 BM Signal Dept Signal Department NXDN Railroad
160.68000 161.49000 CKU474 RM 0 RAN Diesel Shop Diesel Shop NXDN Railroad
160.62000 161.43000 CKU483 RM 0 RAN Hump Hump NXDN Railroad
161.00250 BM 0 RAN Extra Extra NXDN Railroad

It may be worthwhile to search 160-162 and see if anything similar pops up now that you are hearing the "whirling sound"

I thought I heard digital on 160.185 a couple of weeks ago. Only 1 night. But I wonder what Norfolk Southern run in their locomotives? I have seen them being used by CP. And with recent merger talks, might see more Norfolk locomotives. And CP is working on non engineered locomotives in their hump yards in Calgary.

THREAD RESURRECTION

There are five frequencies licensed to "The Railway Association of Canada" at the Alyth yards and the Shepard intermodal facility. IIRC, both of those are CP properties.

I haven't been able to drive near those places this week, but driving across the middle of the city commuting to/from work, I have been able to pick up signals on 160.23 and 161.13, both RAN 0 and no talkgroup. The signal was cutting in and out so I couldn't catch much of what was said except the typical "we got room for 13 cars in this spot" etc.

Once I figure out more about where each channel is in use, I'll submit it to the DB (if it's not already in there).
