• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

DO NOT ASK ME FOR HELP PROGRAMMING YOUR RADIO. NO.
I've read and programmed many Orions but only from the back panel connector. I never had to put it into any special programming mode.

I wasn't aware that there even was a mic port programming cable for an Orion. While it is possible to program an MDX or a 500M from the front panel, no GE documentation I have ever seen gives any indication of a mic port programming cable for an Orion.

There is an optional extended options programming cable which provides an HD15 connector that can be used for programming from NEAR the front of the radio, in a remote mount configuration.

You can go to repeaterbuilder and start browsing the many Orion manuals if you wish, but I've already done that and none of them that I've read indicate that the mic port can be used for programming.

Here, start with this one, which specifically references programming cables:

http://www.repeater-builder.com/ge/lbi-library/lbi-39175a.pdf

At this time I am inclined to think you have been given false information. I do not think that mic port programming is possible with an unmodified Orion.

If' I'm wrong then I would have very much appreciated finding the right answer, oh, about fifteen or twenty years ago when I first started using Orions. Using the DB37 programming cable is usually something of a chore. Not usually very convenient at all.

I agree with Elroy. There was no mic programming on the Orion or 7100 and I am not aware of a 500m/MDX cable that didn't require a PIM (RIB). There is a programming cable (requires a PIM) for the Orion Desktop station that goes on the mic port of the desktop enclosure.

Like Elroy I have only ever seen cables for the rear connector (both for use with PIM and without) and the 2 prong option cable connector (mounted to the control head). I must have 20 Orion/7100 cables of those types with hundreds of Orion and 7100 radios in service.

Do you have a link to what you purchased?

By the way, once a programming cable is connected and the radio powered on it will go into program mode itself (the screen will say PC PROG). This is achieved by the programming cable shorting 2 pins.

Yes, that would appear to be the correct type cable. But mine is the genuine GE version.

The nice thing about that cable is that it connects directly to the RS232 port. No need for a TQ3370 programming RIB box. (I have several of those. Maybe I should sell off a couple before they're worth less than a penny.)

Correct, that is for the desktop enclosure. I would recommend an OEM cable. Check out FMR and New London Technology.
