British mobile operator Everything Everywhere have seemingly won the contract to replace the TETRA based Airwave system used by the emergency services with its 4G based system.

EE wins landmark contract in controversial £1.2bn police radio replacement - Telegraph

My question is will this EE service also replace the PTT service they use for comms currently on TETRA, or will both systems be utilized? This is the first I've ever heard of a consumer system being used for public safety services! Here in Canada most police comms are either P25 or DMR encrypted... so not much knowledge of TETRA, sorry!

Its supposed to replace the Airwave system which is now owned by Motorola. The logical thing would be to have voice on the proven PTT based Airwave system and other stuff on 4G.

Even with the BT and EE merger I can't see the new 'system' rolling out any time soon as Motorola are now kicking up a stink about it.
