To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I can't quite figure it out.
I go to update frequencies in my CDM1550 and "boom"
"Couldn't open port. Check whether Device/RIB are powered on or not, and the Device to RIB, and the RIB to PC connection is OK".
My thoughts are the cable. But I can immediately grab another CDM and the CPS will fire right up and read no issues.
I go back to the problem radio. I get the same error.

Anybody shed some bright lights on this subject?

Thanks, Kevin

Remote head? If so, some of them are finicky. The solution is to pull the head and put it back on the radio. I've got a CDM1250 that just started doing the same thing. I'll probably have to yank it out and put on the bench to get it updated.

Standard dash mount. No remote heads on any of them.
Maybe I need to upgrade to R06.12.09?
The radio is used and I'm not sure what release it was programmed with. He seems to think it was last programmed in 2008.
I love how these radios act some times when it comes to this

I had this happen to me. The connector on the radio was dirty and not making contact

No need to upgrade. All that final release did was allow CPS sharing of same Entitlement ID for 20/25 KHz programming and added support of Windows 8. I am still running R06.12.08. I've modded it for the password bypass, and haven't had any need for the other two improvements.

Cleaned and cleaned the port. Still same message.
I even tried changing the head out for another one. Still didn't work. But I took the head off the problem radio and stuck it on a uhf model I had laying around and it worked on the uhf model.... But it does me no good.... So I'm not sure it's the port..
I'm bout to give up hahaha

I had the same problem with a CDM, and after I had already programmed it successfully several times before.

I did everything to try and correct it, from getting a RIB (was using USB ribless), changing the laptop I was using with a different OS, different cables between rib and radio, etc, etc. But nothing worked.

Eventually, after reading here on RR, and a couple of other places, I finally purchased a Motorola OEM programming cable:

Motorola Ribless Programming Flash Cable AARKN4081B CDM GM MCX Pro New | eBay

And, since purchasing and using that cable, I've never had the problem again.

Those CDMs..and other Motorola radios...seem to have a mind of their own when it comes to programming. As I say, I programmed the CDM numerous times with the ribless USB cable but, then, one day, the radio decided it didn't want to be programmed with that cable, and kept sending the dreaded, "Couldn't open port" message.

But, ultimately, the problem was solved with the new cable.

(And if you think that that cable above cost too much, consider how much money I spent trying to work around it!)

Good luck.

You can always program the radio from the rear accessory connector with the 20 pin flash cable also.

I'm using a standard serial cable.
No RIB
Straight from the serial connector to the front of the radio

It kills me.
I've got 3 CDMs laying around and I can read them all day...
I go back to this one and I continue to get the error.

Took it to our local Motorola shop. Turns out I need 06.12.09. The CPS fired right up when he read it. (Used a RIB Box) Said it was last programmed with that version.
So I went home and installed 06.12.09 and I still get the message.
Maybe I need a RIB Box....
Its just odd that this radio is a problem. I know its not the cable. Im able to turn around and and immediately get into other radios with no issue....

If it's designed for a RIB, I'd use a RIB. RIBless cables crap out far too often.
