• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

We have one VHF P25 ham repeater here in Detroit. Seems rather active, listening to it on a scanner. Any suggestions for a make and model for a dirt cheap radio to look for at flea markets, swaps, etc?
Just a simple, no display needed radio. I know enough people that can program just about anything from just about anyone, so that's not a factor.

An XTS3000 or Astro Saber, either in model 1 configuration would be quite cheap these days and easy to setup.

P25 radio

I have both the XTS3000 and an EF Johnson 5100. I like the Johnson because even a limited keypad model offers FPP and has a display. They both use the same battery and charger, so accessories are not a problem.

I don't have a P25 ham repeater anywhere near me, but still have several EFJ 5100 portables I've picked up from the Internet auction sites. I used them on 2 meters when I went visiting in Hennepin County, MN, and they performed well. The first generation is no longer supported, so they're relatively cheap to get.

I prefer XTS radios, though. Wish the form factor for P25 was smaller. The brick topped off with a baseball bat antenna is too conspicuous, and no one in the family wants to carry the other one. I think some of the Japanese manufacturers' radios are now smaller.

Just last week I picked up a clean UHF XTS3000 model 1 [no display, 48 memories] for $65 from a radio forum. Works perfectly on the local ham P25 repeaters.

I paid $50 for a model 3 Astro Saber in decent shape. My other two model 3s were free.

Thanks

Thanks for the advice. I'll watch for some XTS's and Saber's at the next swap.
I'm sure the EFJ's are good radios, but I get a deep discount on Moto accessories.
