Hi ,
I recently bought a new 436 due to my 396T not Phase 2 capable. I have been to Roanoke and can hear Phase 2 activity but Pittsylvania Co all I get is silence. I dont even get a LNK or DAT on my display. I have seen Gretna rescue on a call and still get silence. Is there a setting that may need to be changed in order to pick it up that im not aware of? before they went Phase 2 they talked all the time. Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Lee,

Pittsylvania County Trunking System, Chatham, Virginia - Scanner Frequencies the last update is from 2014, the control channels could have changed. Dtscho added almost everything and his lives closer to DC, you may need to try ID Search or Discovery or even Close Call to see if all the info is correct, and then submit any changes to radioreference, this is a community based resource and we need users to submit data. If your outside of the county the tower sites look like they are pointed inward and may not be receivable from 3 or 4miles outside of the county.

Lee,

Did a quick FCC search and came up with licences WQQT438 and WQQT441. Both display that the RadioReference database may be missing 1 channel from each simulcast:

North Simulcast: 774.88125
South Simulcast: 773.93125

Try adding those to each of the respective sites in your scanner and retry.

Also found 3 frequencies in the 800 MHz on WQXF253: 858.01250, 859.06250, and 859.68750. You can try adding those as well, maybe in an additional site.

Here is what I have loaded into my 700/800 radios to listen to them:

North Simulcast System:
769.55625
771.38125
771.98125
772.90625

South Simulcast System:
769.08125
770.58125
771.63125
772.60625

Simplex Channels:
770.49375 (118.8 Hz)...Jail ANALOG
774.00625 ($293).......Jail P-25

These frequencies are licensed as MO3, which is Vehicular Repeater. Given how rural Pittsylvania County is, I wondered how they were going to address the requirement of portable coverage.

so nobaody scans this I see

FWIW, reception of this system is pretty sporadic at VIR which is next to the SE corner of the county. Coverage just isn't all that good.

The only times I've ever heard any activity on this system were in the northwest part of the county along VA-40. However, I just have a 996XT and 396XT, so I don't hear the Phase II talkgroups. If I can remember tomorrow, I'll try and check the reception along my commute to work in South Boston.

On my travels through Pittsylvania County on Monday, I was still seeing a decent control channel signal for the south site as far east as Turbeville in Halifax County (maybe 2-3 bars on the 996), even though it wasn't decoding any traffic. Mind you, that's with a Larsen NMO270 antenna.

Keep in mind that these newer systems are much harder to receive than legacy systems/frequencies (but you probably are already aware of that). The coverage footprints (with a few exceptions) typically end just over the border of the intended coverage area. Couple that with simulcast problems scanners have and "zones" vs. full county coverage (some activity might only be heard on the south zone/site and not the north).

My recommendation would be to have everything programmed with ID Search enabled and then drive into/close to one of the transmitter sites and see if you can hear anything (in less populated areas this may require some time in that area). If you can hear it then but not from where you want to hear it, it could be that the signal doesn't reach that area (which might explain not seeing any DAT or LNK indicators). If you have DAT indicator but no activity, it could it's just slow or you may need to check a transmitter location in the other site/zone too.

Are you hearing them??

Yes. No problems.

I own a home on the Halifax/Pennsylvania county line. Interesting enough, I had to go down there today to mow/weed eat the property. (Been hampered by all the rain!) Listened all the way down driving from Amherst County (Highway 130, down to the 29 Bypass), through Campbell County (Hwy 460, then 501 through Rustburg and Brookneal).

Listened on a portable while at the house on Highway 40, a couple of miles east of Cody, while eating lunch.

While at the house, I tried swapping between a couple of different portable antennas on my P7270 radio, to see which was better. Used the FCC Menu function in the radio. I was seeing a -92 dBm signal on a simple quarterwave whip on the portable.

Seeing -86 dBm in the truck on the mobile radio with a 3 dB 800 MHz mobile antenna on the roof.

I personally know the Engineer with Harris who designed and installed the system. Retired now, he lives in Rustburg, and regularly listens to the PittCo system on a portable in the house.

Yes, I have seen some dead spots too. But not many in the areas I frequent.
