• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Kind of new to this stuff, I mainly only have basic knowledge about scanners. I work for a major natural gas utility company here in california. We use radios/transceivers in our work trucks to talk to our dispatchers and we use a specific frequency obviously. My question is: do I still have to be licensed and all that stuff to talk to my dispatcher on our frequency if I buy a portable transceiver? Most of the time I'm in houses responding to gas leaks and if I'm not in the truck to hear my dispatcher if another emergency comes in they get ahold of me via pager (yes people still use them lol). I was looking into getting a Kenwood TH-K20A because we use Kenwood TK-790 transceivers in our trucks. I just don't want to get in trouble and have the FCC knocking on my door, i want to do things the right way. Our company frequency is the only frequency i will be communicating on. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

If you use a personal radio on your employer's system, the licensee (employer) must approve of it. The person in charge of the radio system needs to provide you with the programming information and insure that the operating parameters conform to what their license allows.

You aren't going to want to use a TH-K20A as it's an amateur radio. There's plenty of other options out there though, especially if you're only needing a single channel. Your system may be different if you're a bigger company, but I know a lot of the smaller gas companies I've seen are just using simplex comms (radio to radio) so portable coverage may not be so great. However if that's the case you'll probably be fine receiving. Another thought would be just getting a voice pager and just use it for listening and going to your truck to actually transmit.

You may want to look into getting a used Kenwood TK-2160. You can find them on ebay for under $100 and would work and be legal with your system if you ask them and they allow you to use it. It is FCC Part 90 type accepted.
