Saw some documentation that 6 of the sites around Colorado Springs will become simulcast with a total of 18 channels at each.

Indicated that the change should happen early next year.

Thanks for the information!

It is licensed under WQWT811 for 20 frequencies, but I imagine they will probably avoid the non-NPSPAC frequencies. The 18 channels will certainly help in the event of a major incident.

Locations it will absorb are:
Stanley Canyon (4-012)
Ski Summit (4-013)
Austin Bluffs (4-016)
Airport (4-017)
Templeton Gap (4-022)
Cedar Heights (4-024)

I imagine that it will called the Colorado Springs Simulcast when it comes online. Now the big question is what to do with the "Colorado Springs" (6-039) site since it doesn't actually provide any sort of radio coverage for Colorado Springs users. I have a vote in for name "Quail Loop."

PPRCN is certainly moving in an interesting direction. I am interested in seeing the developments for some of their western sites.

Quail Loop (or Quail Lake Loop) is the name I thought RR would put on it when I saw it was coming online soon. That is the name of the street that the site is located on (atop of the CSP/CDOT building).

That site pretty much only serves CSP units sitting in their office or nearby.

I am reading in another thread how simulcast is not good.

However, isn't the current problem with the multiple towers where an agency is transmitting on one tower and then the next transmission uses on a different tower just as bad, or worse?

I would think simulcast would be the ultimate solution.

I'm confused.

Simulcast is great for the radio system users.

Not so much for normal scanner listeners.

Any word if this is still happening. 2017 almost over :)

Still a work in progress, so maybe really late 2017 or early 2018. They have been replacing and relocating a few of their current towers for this project, so it is taking longer to get done. It seems that most radio projects tend to overrun the planned schedule.

i hope i can can still monitor with my HP1. I dont like what I'm reading about simulcast. I'm pretty close to the -gap site, hopefully I'll pick it out over the others.

I wonder if when Simulacast does go online, will the Black Forest, Calhan, Fountain Valley, Mt Pittsburg and Truckton towers still be active or what?

Those sites should still be active after it goes online. Colorado Springs Simulcast is being built to cover Colorado Springs, not any of the other areas that are covered by those other sites. Taking those sites offline would leave several pretty big holes in coverage.

in case of any distortion with the simulcast sites, stick the stock antenna through a hole in the side of an empty paint can near the bottom. works better than a yagi for simulcast distortion from trunked systems that use lsm.. i guess you could make something similar, maybe a similar shape with cardboard and aluminum foil

I have multiple radios programmed for Colorado Springs and El Paso Co systems. I lock them on different tower combinations to scan. One on Stanley Canyon and Cedar Heights another on Cedar Heights and Ski Summit.and another on Stanley Canyon, Cedar Heights, Ski Summit and Austin Bluffs. The only issue I hear is echo between the radios. Have not heard any talk group transmissions with any lags. They all come in simultaneously on multiple towers.

Will wait and hear what happens when simulcast goes in effect.

Colorado Springs Monitoring

Good Morning: As I started programming my Radio I was excited to find this Thread. I will be traveling and staying in the Springs area for the Holidays. Wondering what sites I should program for the area? I will pretty much be staying in the Springs area, but I'M also interested in any Military Freq if anyone could help me before I arrive.
I will be traveling with my PSR-500/AOR-8200/!! Thanks for the help!! Tom/w9wox

W9WOX,

I am not familiar with those radios. Having said that, the site(s) to program depends on where you are.in the city,

My current radio site combinations are due to the Colorado Springs terrain. East and West boundary is Interstate 25, North and South is Austin Bluffs Pkwy/Garden of the Gods Rd. (Note: Technically, the city dividing North/South and East/West line is the intersection of Pikes Peak and Cascade downtown.)

Stanley Canyon and Cedar Heights for the Northeast
Austin Bluffs, Cedar Heights and Ski Summit for the Northwest
Austin Bluffs,Cedar Heights and Ski Summit for downtown.
Cedar Heights and Ski Summit for the southeast and southwest area.

As for the Military, check the Database for El Paso County Colorado under US Air Force for the Air Force Academy, Cheyenne Mt AFS ,Peterson and Shriever. Ft Carson is separate in the database list.

I hope that helps.

Enjoy your visit.

Some of the discussion for sites occurred recently in the Colorado Springs DTRS thread. The big takeaway is that El Paso County and Colorado Springs can only be found on the Zone 4 (RFSS 4) sites. Do not use Cheyenne Mountain or Quail Loop unless you specifically want to hear everything that is not El Paso County and Colorado Springs. There is a nice site map built into the database.

ElPasoCountyScan also has quite a bit of information for the area, including some military stuff.

W9WOX,

I forgot to mention Ft Carson Site best for Colorado Springs. It is Site 002, Cheyenne Mtn. Database shows 407.9625 as Primary Control Channel and 406.7750 as Alternate. They have been using 406.7750 lately so program both frequencies.

Enjoy

Went online Monday with Stanley Canyon (offline), T-Gap, and Airport. Austin Bluffs joined Tuesday, Cedar Height today (might still in progress), Ski Summit tomorrow. I will submit it to the DB on Friday once things have settled.

thanks for the update! I don't understand all this stuff, I'm still receiving normal traffic from Peterson AFB and T-Gap at the moment. Have they not actually switched on the Simulcast functionality? thanks :)
