Looking for a antenna that works well and covers 120 through 600mhz that terminates to a bnc. This would need to be a whip, used on a portable. I picked up a diamond rh799 which is one of those metal extendable antennas and I don't like it for portable use.

RS800mhz, or Remtronics 800B. Both are the same antenna. Remtronics is available from Universal Radio for considerably less than the RS800

Some Tool on eBay is asking 79 for that radio shack 800mhz antenna...
Is 800mhz antenna optimal for where I will be listening?

Works considerably better than stock rubber ducks on most bands, VHF, UHF, 700, and 800. 21.95 at Universal, with $8 . I use one on all my scanners, HP2, 1095, 668, 106, and the 536. But I rarely use the 536 for reasons I posted elsewhere.

Trick is to find a store that has one

Which you can easily do using their website.

There are eight of them, at four different stores, within fifteen miles of me. Of course if someone is located where there aren't any RS stores nearby, that's obviously not an option!

Based on some of the OP's other posts that hint at a location, I'm betting there are about 40 of them at nearby stores!

I have no radio shack stores near me. There is a sprint that was once a radio shack and there is no antennas there.

Perhaps my idea of "near" and yours aren't the same; it might be worth going to the RS website and doing the Store Locator thing.

Or just order the Remtronix version and pay the shipping ... either way it's a great antenna. I have several.

NO. What EXACT freqs. do you want? 120 is aircraft. There is not much between 500 and 600.

The RS 800 antenna works great on 800 (which the OP doesn't care about), a bit better on UHF (one of the OPs interests), but just slightly better than the stock antenna on VHF. (another of the OP's interests).

I would recommend a dual band antenna that covers VHF/UHF (what he wants to hear).

The good ol' Diamond RH77CA. Another one almost as good (with a surprisingly smaller footprint) is the Watson W-801 Regular Gainer. I consider that one a sleeper amongst HH scanner antennae.

I second the RH77CA. I use it for the frequencies defined above and it works just fine. You go with the RS-800MHZ and you'll hear 800 fine, but the other ranges will be severely curtailed.

Has anyone tried any if the Nagoya antennas? The rh701 looks identical to the rh77ca. I have the Nagoya na771 but it is not usable portable use.
