President is in Yosemite today. This vehicle looks like a SS vehicle. Notice the antenna on the back. Any idea what it's for ? Looks like it could be HF....

That's the ROADRUNNER communications vehicle. And yes, the have HF on board.

They often don't deploy the HF antenna, but lately I have seen it out more often in motorcades.

When the president was in NYC there were "beeping" or jammers on to ensure you hear absolutley nothing even if you crack the encryption.....So good luck!

Do you have anything to back up that statement? And what exactly are you saying they were jamming?

I agree with Dave. Please clarify. If I understood correctly, you say that there was beeping or jamming to ensure their transmissions were not heard right? So if they jam a certain frequency or set of frequencies, would they not be hindering their own transmissions?

Here in Ontario, when the G20 happened, when there was a presential motorcade going through an area, cellphones stopped working in a certain area around the motorcade. This was announced in local media well before the arrival of the POTUS. It wouldn't surprise me if they just had a blanket wide-frequency ****-blaster to kill everything in the area.

Terrorists have been known to use everything from radio controlled toy cars to cell phones to detonate IED's. Hard lessons learned in the ongoing war on terror, deploy wide-band jammers in the Prsidental convoy.

Use of wide-band jamming is SOP in Afghanistan and Iraq due to remotely triggered IED's, especially on the MRAP class of vehicles. POTUS and other cabinet level folks have used area jamming for years. The units in combat theaters are a lot higher output power.

On a humorous note
, saw a video that someone had taken of a US Convoy going by in Afghanistan, were the Taliban had emplaced several IED's on the road used, and when the convoy was passing through, attempted to trigger them via radio. It did not work!

So, the Taliban fighters were trying to figure out what went wrong and were digging up the bombs.

At that same moment, the guy with the trigger transmitter was standing with the others and showed his leader that the button did not work.....
BOOM..... they "removed" themselves from the planet.

Someone uploaded the video to the internet.

Doesn't look like the back end of a Rodrunner to me (I've been inside one) and the antenna on the bumper appears to be a COMROD 30-88MHz end fed or similar model. The USMC helicopter will have a SINCGARS compatible 30-88MHz radio among other things and I suspect the vehicle with bumper mounted antenna can communicate with the helicopter and may be staffed by military personnel and not Fed employees.

I've also got a couple of antennas from late model IED jammers and they cover most "popular" frequencies.

ROADRUNNER used to be an actual van (they were when I was in one), but over the years they have moved to Suburban-type vehicles.

ROADRUNNER is usually staffed and operated by WHCA personal, who are military. They are part of the White House Military Office.

You could be right about the SINCGARS radio with the helicopters, but they do have HF capabilities, as needed. Usually SATCOM as well...

Here's a photo of the whole vehicle, courtesy of a member of the Coldwarcomms Yahoo Group:

I got to see the inside of a Roadrunner when Bush 41 came to my town. The WHCA guy I talked to was a very nice Army SSGT who was about my age. He gave me his business card & told me if I was ever interested in relocating to the DC area....

Sounds like your radio / phone had a problem.

In my experience, I've never lost Cellular or Radio reception during a Potus/VPotus or other visitor in the area. As CP will attest, losts of ENC, but that is usually at "Wheels Down", but then, just listen to the Local/State for the Escort info on the normal channels

That's military for you. Whenever we have POTUS in NYC, we have 70 cm interference from military radar. The cell jammer is a suitcase job designed to stop suicide bombers with cell remote detonators. It's good for 1500 ft and runs for prolonged periods of time.
