• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I read somewhere that the FCC dropped FEES for GMRS licenses. I had a GMRS license that expired sometime in 2005, so I thought I would apply for a new license. Well, I guess the info I got was wrong as they wanted $70.00 from me. What's up with this?

They dropped the AMOUNT, not the entire fee. There was a glitch on the day it took effect that allowed some people to not be required to pay any fee, but it was quickly fixed.

Actually, it dropped to $65. They just recently (as of a few weeks ago) raised it up to $70.
It would be interesting if one were a fly on the wall in their offices. It would be nice to know the logic behind that decision! Its not like their agency is really concerned with Gmrs at this point anyway. 73, n9zas

Apparently the FCC has been taking lessons from telemarketers, effectively charging a "processing fee" on top of all licensing fees. They refer to this as a "regulatory fee" or "administrative fee" and add it on to your licensing fee (or not, if they choose) instead of just bundling it in.

Supposedly the cost of processing the registration is reviewed every year or so and in this case, the cost of processing the registration fee, was higher than the income derived from the fee. So it was simply more profitable for the FCC to DROP the registration fee and process.

Which is most peculiar, you'd think they'd increase the fee to continue making their mandated profits. Government logic, go figure. Despite the FCC's claims to be following Reaganomics and calculating all fees on a "cost plus" basis, I think we all know their fee structures could be determined by throwing darts, or spaghetti, at a wall.

Since one of our " favorite" federal agencies has lost sight of what they're tasked to do, or even enforce anymore I doubt I'll be renewing my Gmrs license since there's just no point. I rarely use it, so its redundant at this point. 73, n9zas

And those who got the FREE licenses, were contacted by the FCC and given a period of time to Pay or be fined and subject to collection and fees

Nope...not selective..there is a thread on it, somewhere here.
Seems the computers claimed they mailed notices (email or snail) and the only notice folks got was the Treasury Collection Notice. Upon complaints, many resolved with a few clicks on the FCC site for the orginal fee structure. They were to have resent the notices

If I recall, folks only had to log into the FCC RedLight application
Selective enforcement? Profiling?

Were any licenses cancelled for failure to pay?

Bill, thanks for filling in the blanks. I hadn't seen another thread on the subject, but do please know that I was just kidding with my "Selective enforcement? Profiling?" comment. Probably should have used a smiley. :)

By the time my GMRS license comes up for renewal in a couple of years, the fee will probably be up to $75 or more.

Regards,

Frank.
